This la a good week to look around us here in the hills and appreciate what we have in the way of wildlife and wonder what we can do to preserve it. It's been a real good winter for looking around at. The very heavy snows drovs the deer . down into our valleys and If you havent watched the buckskins the past month you must be blind. One sweet dd lady complained the bucks were eating the wash off the line, but this report has not been confirmed. (This may be the same lady who reported that the mice had got into her drawers and ate all the her centerpiece.) Real wildlife has always been a source of great Interest to me. I started in a small way, of course-lyi-ng on my stomach watching aids. Fascinating creatures, ants. You must remind me to tell you about them some day. fringe of! NEXT STEP was grasshoppers. There are 3,218 species of grasshoppers, and they all fiddle around all summer and starve to death next winter, as opposed to ants. Then I graduated to birds, and rabbits, and prairie dogs, and then coyotes, which I chased on horseback and never did catch one. Our creek yielded chubs, a small fish which I've never seen elsewhere. They were about this Mg, and fried down about like an index finger, but i j . delicious. They were small enough to carry in the overalls pocket, with loose worms and a cold egg sandwich. Nothing like roughing it for wildlife. Know why I don't like carrots? For about three boyhood years I made pretty good money trapping muskrats. Bait was half a carrot, stuck on a two-- i foot stick pointed over a trap, The muskrat reached for the carrot and put one foot in the trap. On the way home from the trapline,' every morning, left-ov- er carrots were eaten. No wonder 1 hate 'em. Even creamed. hearts old 48 pick- deslre-- an up. After four years of trout fishing, you should see the assortment of snags which line the garage wall. Trophies. As a small boy on the Wyoming ranch I lay quietly for hours and watched beavers work on their dams; watched bobcat kittens play in a grassy glade; admired strutting prairie chickens doing their thing. And when nothing else was stirring there were always the ants. Wish I had the guts to take a horse and a small mule, next summer, and spend two weeks alone in the High Uintas. I havent-n- ot the guts, the horse, the mule, or foe two weeks alone. Especially the guts. -- Mac. I asked. up? just what we That might be are looking for.
