Take the other night for instance . . . In spite of its being nearly bedtime, Linda decided to bake a cake. Everyone in the family (but me) agreed this was a good idea. (I never bake cakes because I don't especially like cake. If the family wants a cake they have to bake it themselves When the cake came out of the oven, they all agreed unanimously that I could make the frosting. 1 MY LADY FAIR Louise was If she asked, the other evening, Would like to Join the American decided Legion Auxiliary. She mem Inactive an she would as her. She's eligible, all right, through her Dad. (Im F with sinus trouble.) Her father was a captain In the medics In the First World War. Quite a man, the doctor. He bummed out wek after his graduation, settled In a little town in northeastern Nebraska, slept in somebodys back room until he established a practice, and became one of the areas most successful (more than 2,000 babies and never lost a mother) and popular (he never got any sleep) physicians in a huge area. Dr. Francis Patrick Dorsey was a Mg, strapping, handsome Irishman with snapping black eyes. He married a concert pianist and they raised four boys and one girl. Louise, being the only lass In the family, was idolised by her Dad, and this accounts for her complete spoilage. 4-- broke out he left his young family and his thriving young practice and Joined the Army. He spent most of his time in Southern United States, fighting the flu epidemic which took so many thousands, and returned after to war to rebuild his practice and his home life. The doctor was very proud of his military record. Every Armistice Day he polished up his puttees, which he later changed to boots, and stuffed himself into his captains uniform and went downtown to take part in the parade. The annual parade was really something in those days, cording to MLF. There was always a band and plenty of flags, and any one who didnt remove his hat when the flag passed by was apt to get beaten and kicked. ac- IT B EASIER to understand, today, why he resented me so Utterly. His only daughter was his pride and Jealous Joy, the prettiest girl in town, and I was a wild young tramp printer. Qt tickled me, years later, to learn that he went to some expense to put a tracer on me and learned to his discomfiture that I came from a "very good family.) He retired in a blaze of glory, none of his own doing, and scratched Uf $180,000 in bad Mils. Over the years he mellowed toward me, a little bit, although the only time he earns forth was once when we were stranded in San Diego. The doctor spent his last two years with us, we became fast and mutually-admirifriends, and he died at 86, still steadfast in his pride in the American Legion, and his undying love for his only daughter. This morning theres a little lump in my throat not entirely caused by recurring flu . . . The picture of Dr. Dorsey, in his captain's uniform, has been brought from Bomewhere and occupies the place of honor in our living room. It would be nice, but unnecessary, to build a little shrine around it. -- Mac. TO BE ELECTED . to make cake frosting at 9 pjn. Is not my idea of a swinging evening. To say I was disgruntled would be a gross understatement. I started clanging kettles around and hunting up ingredients, grumbling all the while. Then I discovered I had no canned milk. I have three good, easy cake frosting recipes -each calling for canned milk. I usually buy severay itty-bit- ty cans of milk. One is opened each time I frost a cake, part is used and the rest left in the frig to spoil. I'm very effeclent about things like that. ng Marion News Mae Olsen had the misfortune of breaking her ankle. She was in the hospital for a few days, but is home now. Rockland, Me., As the power companies struggle to keep pace with the ever Increasing demand for electricity they have to cope with the' clean air and water people, too. There are three sources of power with which to Courier-Gazett- e: generate electricity, nuclear, hydro and fossil fuels. There are those who damn the dams that supply the hydro-electr- ic plants. Nuclear plants are experiencing opposition. Coal and oil fired plants are under attack, too. If all of them are successful in their aims, we are going to be a bit on the dim side of things, let alone industrial power. We might turn to the kerosene lamps, but if memory serves us right they smoke, too. Oh well, ONLY THIS TIME I didnt even have a can of spoiled canned milk. Even though I KNOW I make caramel tmare... Besides, cake makes your teeth rot. If you were more like me and didnt eat cake you wouldnt have to worry about rotten teeth! With this I gave a vicious snarl, showing a mouthful of black snags. By this time my frosting was looking more and more like gunk. Maybe I can save it by adding some powdered sugar, I thought. AFTER DUMPING in the whole box, it still didnt thicken up it kinds oozed around in the pan. Besides that, it had now changed from a curdled golden brown to a sickly grey-wh- ite with little lumps of powdered sugar floating around in it. Its no use, I grouched, this mess is not going to turn into frosting. Im gonna use it anyway, thatll show youf Any one who doesnt like it can Just give their share to the dog. Giving them my very best -- who pens-hls-trap -look, I dumped the frosting on the cake, spilling half of it on the table in the process. THE CAKE, frosted with that gunk, defied description. I pushed it to the back of tiie table and started wiping up the mess. sick-looki- ng The kids were very, very quiet. About this time Bobby, who had missed out on the whole scene (lucky kid), walked into the kitchen. Taking a quick look at the slop on the table and another at the solemn faces of the three girls, he asked, in all sincerity 'What happened? DidKrissy throw up? Like I said, its lucky for him I have a sense of humor.-M- ary Bee. Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association President R. C. Rleder has predicted: The present shortage of natural gas in the United States and the increasing dependence of our nation on foreign crude are the results of governmental policies which are discouraging exploration for petroleum.
