I always answer nonchalantly that It Is really very easy, Just a matter of setting the proper mood. Every Monday morning, with the family all off to work or school, I put the baby to bed, toss the first load of diapers In the washer (how can one little baby possibly soil so many diapers? I must check and see if one of my neighbors is slipping her diapers into my wash load) I brew up a second cup of coffee, sharpen all the pencils I can find ( I dont write with a pencil, but they do come in handy) . THEN COMES the hard part, finding some paper. I sometime a manage to find some clean sheets of typingpaper, but I have been known to write on dirty paper napkins, last months unpaid Mils and the margins of tha newspaper . . . From there on its easy. I Just sit down at the typewriter and wait for inspiration to strike . . . Which is exactly where I have been for the past hour and 27 minutes. So far today, no Inspiration, my mind is blank. (There are some who will venture the opinion that this is a normal state of mind for me .. . they are right). I have chewed all the pencils down to stubs, drank three pots of coflee and put the second load of diapers in the washing machine. Still no inspiration. (213) 273-66- 14 Dear Sirs: 1 am addressing this' letter to those people who are sympathetic to retaining the Summit Stake Tabernacle in its original Mate. The destruction of this building would be a most unfortunate occurrence. This structure would be lost as a landmark and guidepost for the people of the community and those who travel through the valley. Historically all good cities have focal points that serve as a catalyst for communal pride and rallying points such as the Temples of the Greek Acropolis and the Gothic Cathedrals of Medieval Europe. Needless to say, some of these buildings have become obsolete because of changing requirements in social needs, however, when the buildings were recognized as works of art they were retained by the people because of their desire to express historically the ideals that prevailed during their epoch. These buildings were maintained, many times by extremely poor countries, so that the driving spiritual forces that existed during their time could be expressed to the generations that followed. To destroy the method of construction that is expressed in this building would be a tremendous loss to Architectural History. If this building is demolished our society will be unable to study the techniques of construction that prevailed during this time. To analyze the structure, details and planning of older buildings, architects can evaluate and compare their own work. Without these guideposts, they Happy Birthday Douglas Parker, Paul Chappell, Kyle Roath, Cory J. Utah and Wyoming. & may be guilty of making mistakes without knowing the intrinsic qualities of a building that existed during a certain period of history. When a building like the Summit Stake Center is lost we can never, regardless of how hard we try, re pin that same quality. This is partly due to technological advancements and a loss of craftsmanship that does not exist today. To tear the building down and reconstruct it in a new location would be as much a fiasco as the present thoughts, because we can never recapture the spirit of the times, both religiously and architecturally that were present during the construction of this building. I hope that money does not become the prime consideration in this decision. The church is too wise to make that mistake. Ludwig Hllberslemer said, "When material and financial concern is most significant we develop civilizations; but when artistic and spiritual goals are paramount, we transcend civilization and establish great cultures. I implore you to reconsider this important decision; if not the hearts of the people of Utah will weep for the loss of a beautiful lady who will never be seen again.
