Jesse Stoker went to work for the Union Pacific as a fireman, back in 1923. He has moved up through the ranks, and later this montyi he will take his place at the throttle (souse me, boss, is there a throttle on a diesel f) of a mainline freight and then he plans to take over a passenger run from Evanston to Ogden. His first run in 1923 was to Park City. In those days the mark of a good fireman was his pbility to spread an even layer of coal over the gleaming fire in the firebox. A good average load was 2100 tons, and now the big freights haul an average of 7,000 tons up the steep grade in the Weber Canyon. The popular hoghead has seen the change from hand-fire- d to stoker-fire- d to oil burners, to diesels to gas turbine, and he admits that he still misses, the whistle on the big steam engines which have become obsolete. Piling up a lot of hours on the Park City run, Jesse pends his vacation time in travel. Winter in Arizona is his idea of the good life, but he loves Utah in the summer, - mm.
