Show THE SUMMIT COUNTY BEE 4 Kamas Mayor and (ouncilmen Make Big Decision Coalville, Utah Thursday, August on Type of Material To Be Used in Street Surfacing Kamas towns mayor and city council recently had a difficult decision to make: Should they make Kamas the first community on or near the Wasatch Front to take the big step of using a waste product of the paper-makiindustry for city streets? They decided they should. The ng project is finished on one and miles of streets and roads in Kamasy and the result appears to be magnificent. Certainly the project cost g, far less than the familiar five-eight- hs black-toppin- and the finished product is apparently completely satisfactory. Lignon sulphonate is that stuff in trees which glues the tree together. It is a waste product of paper-makimills, and for many years it has been discard- ed. Then some one with imagination tried it on a country road, and now it is in big demand. The liquid comes in big drums and is sprayed upon a surface which does not need be so expensive as blacktop. In fact, Kamas bought reject aggregate at 10 cents a ton. The entire project costs about 45 per cent as much as blacktopping. The result: A smooth street with a life expectancy of 30 to 40 years and it suffers much less freeze-tha- w damage than blacktop. City government studied long and hard before making the now theyreof glad J. did. Lang Harry they Inc., sold the job and worked with the council and crew on the installation. Lang says its the finest group he has ever been associated with. Tooele is the only other Utah community which has used lignon sulphonate, and Park City is Bet-R-Roa- Lignon sulphonate, the liquid which holds a tree together, is sprayed on Kamas streets in the towns new surfacing project, just completed.
