Every suggestion gets a reply as promptly as possible, re- -, fleeting the views of the companys specialists on the subject and providing a capsule history of it, Mr. Anderson noted. The writer who suggested use of a rocket to carry atelephone wire to the mom, for example, was told that to date a wire had not been manufactured that could withstand the stresses of a 239,000-mi- le span. Even if such a wire existed and were sent to the moon, it was explained that the wire would soon twist around the planet and use the mom revolves around the earth and the earth rotates on its axis. Alexander Graham Bell didnt have much help inventing the telephone, but when it comes to improving on his idea, thats another story. Every year the Inventive public sends the Bell System thousands of suggestions for improving telephone service, according to E.H. Anderson, local manager for Mountain Bell. Some of the ideas are pretty far out. Like the one for providing communications with the moon-lau- nch a rocket, carrying one end of a telephone wire that would unwind from a huge reel. Or a suggestion for seagoing telephone booths: Put pay phones cm floats in the middle of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Farfetched or not, every idea gets a hearing, for no me can be New Plow Helps U.P.L. Run Cable Up Mountain miles Three service of electrical cable was Installed without disturbing the esthetic value of Mother Nature on the mountains south of Park City. No poles or overhead lines were replaceused in the 15,840-fo- ot ment installation which runs from the top of Bonanza Flats north to the top of Park City's Prospect Avenue. In nine working days Utah Power Light Company accomplished the feat with the help of a new and unique plow, the Parsons Vibratory plow which breaks ground, lays cable and covers the cable in one operation. The new 7200 volt electrical cable will be available for any anticipated electrical service in the Bonanza Flats t area. According to UP&L Park City manager, Clair Boyle, the actual cable burial took Just three days. The pw. plow laid 150 feet of cable in a 3 wide trench in deep and 39 seconds. Six reels, 8 x 12 feet with 3000 feet of cable on each, were used in the three mile course. The Parsons Vibratory plow 30-in- ch is a newly developed plow which UP4L recently acquired. Only two men are trained to operate the special plow which carries a 6000 pound reel as it buries the cable. Wherever the P.V. plow goes, so goes P.V. plow operators Spence Lawrence and Delray Barrington, both from Ogden, Utah. Mr. Boyle said that the work crew went up the mountain and the earth along the mountain roadside with the P.V. plow prior to the cable installation to remove large boulders from the course and to uncover any underground water culverts which they would have to bihard-clay-ro- ck pre-ripp- ed pass. The was used to e back-ho- work around the water culverts. The work began cm Wednesday, September 2, and the preripping stage was finished before the heavy rains began on Friday afternoon, September 4. The crew resumed work on September 9 and the plow operators experienced an extra problem to keep the large plow from becoming mired in the which resulted from day-mu- d the three-da- y heavy rainfall of the weekend. After the cable ends were spliced, the crew buried them underground and the three-mi- le electrical service was completely concealed and ready for use on Wednesday, September 16. burial of electrical cable eliminates the problem of power failure which can be caused by landslides, storms or accidents breaking poles and downing power lines. The underground cable is so constructed that water seepage into the earth-cpvertrench cannot damage or deteriorate the exterior covering of the electrical cable which is strong yet pliable to bend with the contour of the trench. Underground ed Another advantage of the underground cable system is that it allows the beauty of the mountains to persist without die landscape being interrupted with poles and overhead power lines. The Bonanza Flats to Park City installation was the sec-mJob for the unique Parsons Vibratory plow. The plow was first used to build a special power delivery project to Dead Horse Point that will serve the state park's visitor center and the public camp ground. This is the second underground system installed in the Park City area. Two months ago UP4L put in a 4000-founderground cable service in the LaChacra E states in Snyderville which abuts Park City West properties on the southeast end. The P.V. plow was not used and the work crew on that project used a back-ho- e to dig the trenches. The men laid the power line into the trench as a reel carryingtruck dropped it while moving along the side of the trench. This work took over two weeks for the power companys crew to complete and did not include the covering of the cable. Mountain Bell put in telephone cable and covered the trench. To compare the two underground cable installation work completed this summer, Mr. Boyle remarked that the Parsons Vibratory plow method was more efficient and completes the Job in a much shorter time id ot absolutely certain when something new, and usable, will come to the surface, Mr. Anderson said.
