Dwyer's subject was "Japan." Miss Dwyer, in company with a number of other American teachers, was the guest of the Japanese government last summer, traveling over many miles of Japan and visited all her principal cities. Customs and religions of Japan have not changed a great deal through the years, but changes that have been made are very drastic Miss Dwyer stated, especially in architecture. Buildings destroyed by the big earthquake a few years agtf some of them fifteen hundred years old, have been replaced by ultramodern structures employing such materials as glass bricks, chromium and electrical equipment. Education In Japan is compulsory and Japanese people are great read-e- n, Miss Dwyer said, their spare time. being spent in reading good books. Customs are undergoing a change as well as architecture Miss Dwyer stated, but many of. the old families. still cling to traditions followed by their forefathers many generations ago.
