In only three states, Oregon, South Carolina and Iowa, does the plain citizen have an even chance of getting a license plate No. 1 to dignify his car, according to a survey published by the American Automobile association. In Iowa, 99 "1" plates are dis tributed, going to the first applicant in each county. Early ' birds also get South Carolina's 40. In Oregon, the solitary along with many other low numbers, is assigned by lot. Twenty-on- e states baffle all aspirants to the coveted number, by assigning it to the governor, and four others New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Utah simply do not issue No. 1 plates. Ohio, on the other hand, by an ingenious combination of letters, manages to issue 1,778 plates bearing the prime number. All of these, however, have been reserved permanently to the present owners since 1935. In seven states, assignment of the low number par excellence has become a political perquisite. In New Jersey, 21 are issued, each going to a state senator from the respective counties. In Washington, assignment is made by county auditors, treasurers, assessors and other officials. Missouri's No. 1 tag has been held by the same person for 20 years, and in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Rhode Island, license tag patricians have kept the number for several Craving for Knowledge Have You a Favorite Cake Recipe?-Se- nd It In It May Win Cash Prize you decide to give your family a real treat and you bake one of those luscious, tempting chocolate cakes, or it may be a delectable marble cake or a deli cious devil's food cake, made from your favorite recipe, and the folk all reach for a second, or perhaps a third, helpingr-no-w isn't that gratifying! Farmer John and his wife dust off the en cyclopedia and reference books, send to the state library for the latest material on the subject at hand, carry the portable typewriter to a comfortable spot, and prepare to attack some problem assigned to them for the next paper of their local farm club. Such has been the metamorphosis of Tuscola county farmers in the last few decades. With the most extensive organization of farm clubs in the state, this county is proud of the aggressive activity of these flourishing and progressive agricul tural units. "More and more these clubs are realizing the important part they play in community life," says E. L. Benton, Tuscola county agriculture agent. "Organized for the advancement and improvement of farm life, it is the applied industry of member families that makes these clubs a success. "Also, from an educational standpoint, farm clubs are an asset to a community. The farmer today is avid for learning, and there is no better or easier way to satisfy this yearning than in friendly discussions at club meetings." Among the Tuscola county clubs are the Linden, Ellington-AimeHickory, Indianfields, Watertown, Koylton, North Vassar, Juniata, South Novesta, Kingston, and the Liberty. . r, Wells-Dayto- n, Lighthouse Keepers, Too, Replaced by Machines Washington. Mechanical devices are driving the ed light- house with its resident keeper out of existence, according to statistics recently presented to a house com- mittee. In the period from 1932 to 1937, the number of lighthouses with resident keepers was reduced from 617 to 522, and the number will probably be further reduced this year. During the same period, the number of aids to navigation increased from 21,574 to more than 28,000. Lighthouses are replaced, where the opportunity offers, by lighted buoys and., other automatic devices. Fog signal stations still require a resident keeper. Only 31 lightship stations are now maintained, as compared with 44 in 1932. In some places, however, the lightship seems a fixture, as, for example, off Nantucket shoals. five-ye- ar Town Vault Gives Up Pair of Lace Panties Sunday. The aged scientist will be ninety-fothis year, but says he desires to live just five more years to finish his studies. Other than the fewest of details he refuses to divulge exactly how he expects to arrive at the much sought-fo- r formula, but declares he is sure he will live to be over one hundred if he is successful. Found at work in his laboratory where he still keeps regular hours as he did 60 years ago, Branly said: "You see, I am in excellent health. It is because I have a secret." And when asked if it was the secret of youth, half ironically and half amusedly he replied: "Without ur Wakefield, Mass. Town Clerk Frederick S. Harts hone opened a long forgotten drawer of the town vault and withdrew from it a package that had gone unnoticed since the last generation. The package was addressed from a New York sample house to a man that had been dead several years. Yellow Powder Coneoeted. He then pointed to a container filled with a yellow powder. He took a small pinch and put it on the tip of his tongue. He then followed the same procedure with another pinch. "That," he said when he had finished, "is my secret, that powder. But I can't tell you its name. First, in order to obtain it, it is necessary to be a doctor, for there are men who have taken it and died from the results. "You understand," he continued, "it is necessary to know how and when to use it. For myself I find it admirable. And after that I have my Saint-Emilion- ." When asked what the latter was, he said it was another secret, but that he could give more details concerning that. Wine "Saint-Emilion- ," Essential to Him. he explained, "is the king of wines, which is enriched by voyage. Barrels of it were once sent to Palestine by boat, but it was returned to Bordeaux by the same conveyance. It thus obtained a mellowness, a warmth and bouquet incomparable to its original state. It is not a table wine, but with my powder and several sips of the wine between meals I am sure of prolonging my life." And there he refused to give any more information concerning either the powder or the wine except that they both must be taken in the correct amounts and at the proper time. The scientist admits, however, he attributes his age to a great extent to having lived a sane and rigorously regulated life. He is a great believer in vegetables and fruits and has kept the most regular hours for the last 15 years. Today, she probably is the foremost student of brand nomenclature in the country, and has listed the 20,000 or more brands of the Dakotas in two volumes. Besides being vice president of the Association of Secretaries of State Cattle Organizations, secretary of the Western South Dakota Live Stock Growers association, she is secretary of the South Dakota Brand commission, where one of her duties consists in helping to wipe out rustling. Rustlers Still Active. "There's plenty of rustling yet," she said. "The days when a' man could round up a herd of cattle and hold them are gone but with trucks and good roads, a modern cattle rustler can load his truck and be 500 miles away before the owner discovers his loss." State inspectors have been able to check much rustling through copies of brands furnished them by Miss Stewart. "Choosing a brand is as delicate an act as naming the new baby," she says, and points out that although humane societies have protested branding, the animal, in reality, suffers little pain from it. She pointed to one of the cattle e on her ranch. "My own brand is XI. I picked it because it's easy to 'run on.' That only means it goes on easily, and is easily seen and read." Brand Tricks Fail. "Rustlers have a lot of tricks to change brands, but none that would fool an expert cowman," she said. "Often they'll burn the second brand through a wet blanket to make the new brand appear old." She asserted that the reburning of the old brand causes it to heal slowly, but in spite of this, the only conclusive evidence is the skin of the dead animal, where the old brand shows up distinctly. Miss Stewart was one of two girls sent overseas during the World war. from South Dakota by the General Federation of Women's Clubs. "I did everything over there from orchestra to singing with a dancing with the men and making doughnuts by the hundreds," she said. Her girlhood ambition, incidentally, was not to become a brand expert. She had several years of training in voice in Baltimore and Chicago. Now, wherever she goes, she's called on to lead the comd munity singing and every raspy voice tunes in. 3,000-acr- 40-pie- For 50c WE CALL FOR AND DELIVER.
