FRIDAY, REMINISCENCE OF A LOCAL PIONEER On January 28th, years ago, there was bom in Sweden one of the characters who was destined to play one of the unique parts in the drama of the western development. He was christened Charles A. Stain and while a small child was sent to Utah by his mother, who was a widow, to be raised here in company with a small brother by friends who had Joined in the emigration of Mormons and until his mother could raise sufficient funds to bring her to her future home amid the Rockies. In his youth he learned to bear the hardships of the pioneers and while still a young man was caught in a severe blizzard in the Sanpete moun-tian- s and before being rescued was completely worn out physically, suffering frozen feet and lower limbs before his rescue. At the hospital where he lingered between life and death for several months his lower limbs were amputated, but he finally won his way back to health and his courage and determination has been an inspiration to others who were unfortunate.1 He never lost touch with his native land a few weeks ago he was requested by Dr. Strindberg of Stockholm, to furnish early pictures or writings which would depict in detail the sufferings and privations undergone by the early settlers who migrated to Utah and California.
