One Year 85c One Year 60c ABOUT BATHING SUITS Remember back about twenty or thirty years when women s (bathing suits of the time were things of construction and it was considered shameless for a man to admit openly that he had the mental image of a feminine form. Those bathing suits were of low visibility and enormous A girl wingspread. They covered the situation thoroughly. without escort had to be content with wading in shallow water, for, once wet, she was gone once down, she was out of the picture. The ensemble usually had a dress-lik- e affair; the most daring of which had the hemline about midway between the ankle and the knee, thus making it apparent that the young women had legs, but not exposing their exact nature, since black cotton stockings were a part of the contraption. Well . . . there were more fish caught in limpid streams in those days because men kept their eyes on their floats. But the bathing suit of today. The ingenuity of designers is little short of miraculous. It took a pretty good imagination last summers innovations but the next after to picture step - somebody had it. Knowing that natural progress was in the direction of less material, could you figure any way in which it could be done. There simply had to be some connection, you know, and there was nothing, apparently, that could be clipped off the top or lMttoni. But look at this years models! Talk about covering all the essentials of a proposition without wasting anything What next. kfcU Know YOU CAN BUY IN SUGARHOUSE FOR LESS MONEY AND SAVE Come In and Ask About j j These SPECIALS Greasing Washing Oil Drain 5 Qts. of Fine Pure Pennsylvania Oil I j i I 5 GaL of Pure Pennsylvania (MI h AND i RETREAD TIRES Allowance on Your Old Tires on Our Time Payment Plan. The old whaling vessels, huge and cumliersome, carrying a nest of small lioats to search out and kill the whales, as well as all necessary Implements for trying out" the , blubber, hare all but disappeared from the famous whnlery grounds In the Bering sea. Still common In antarctic 'waters, they are seldom seen In waters .about the Aleutian Islands. In their place hare come small, stream whalers." Fourteen of these modern ships are .roaming the cold Bering sea. With a .200 ton gross displacement, each car: rles a Sven Foyn gun mounted on a high and flaring bow. No more do ;xnen row away from the motor ship In search of whales; with the modem gun and high speed, each vessel seeks out Its own whales and shoots the harpoon from the bow gun. The gun throws the harpoon, four feet In length and weighing a hundred pounds, from 30 to 40 yards. Behind the barb of the harpoon Is a cap, containing a charge of explosives timed to go. off three seconds after the harpoon has struck. The whales do not often run with these appliances; the strike" Is nsually fatal. Processed on Shore. One of the great dangers of the older methods of whiling was that of fire. The blubber was tried out," or cooked down. In great kettles rled aboard the ship. The crews turned from hunters to butchers and cooks," and the whale was reduced to oil and whalebone aboard the ship, to the accompaniment of an unholy odor and the constant danger that one of the cooking fires might get out of control and destroy the vessel Under modem methods factories for processing the whales are established on shore near the whaling areas. When a whale Is killed it Is Inflated with air and marked with a flag. After the days catch Is completed the dead are gathered up and towed to shore, where the factory carries on the oil producing processes with a much greater efficiency than was possible under the old methods. It's Still Dangerous. Not all the danger and the excitement has gone, though, from the actual killing of the whale. So testified Capt Peder Oness of Kodiak, master and gun man of one of the Bering sea whalers, when he said : It's Just as dangerous as It nsed to be. Nobody has an easy time standing on the deck beside the gun, in a heavy sea and the gales are bad off the Aleutian Islands. The whale zips up for as long as you can say 'scat and you are supposed to shoot hln now. That Is hard to do." But the Bering sea whalers were Jubilant as they started out this year. Prices on whale oil were double what they were last year and the prospects for a large catch were good. Best quality oil Is used for soap making, while sperm oil, which comes from the head cavities of certain types of whale, Is nsed In perfumes and medicines. Only one company, thqt of William Schupp, known as the whale king of the raclflc," operates In the Pacific whaling Industry. The company operates seven boats from Seattle and seven from Canadian porta. Last year 'they got 814 whales. snub-nose- GIFTS FOR FATHER AT REASONABLE PRICES d At The UNITED 5-10-- 25c STORE 1069 East 21st South Sugarhouse FOR SALE Bargain HUGHES ELEC RANGE Oven and Two Plates $700 ELECTRIC WASHER First Class Condition $20.00 INQUIRE So. 10th E.
