The cry of machine' in politics la as old as representative government. We hare beard It in Utah. At times it has drowned even the old yell of "church influence. It has been potent enough at times to change the complexion of a campaign, but in almost every case it is only a cry, and when boiled down, merely means the combination of the friends of some man whom they wish to place in office, and lacks all semblance of unfair methods. It is to be supopsed that the same old tactics will be pursued this fall, and the cry be heard over the stale. The voter, however, has only to look at the record of the man who is up for office, and not for a moment forget that there are machines and machines. STOCKTON.
