Show tives. Some of them have affirmed to me that there once was a man among them whose name was Mani and his mother's name was Ilina. This native put his hand in the ray of the sun and Commanded the sun not to move until his wife finished PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. (Continued) In company with a number of our elders we visited the great crator, or as the natives call it, Hale a Kala. In english it means House of the Sun and is on the Island of Mani, at an elevation of ten or twelve - thousand thous-and feet, and said to be the largest volcano in the world, but it is not in action now nor has it been, within the memory of this generation. The mouth of this crater is twenty or thirty Miles in circumference. In this great pit are a dozen cones two or three hundred feet in height. We decended 'to the bottom of the crator, several hundred feet deep, and as we did so, we sunk nearly near-ly to our knees in ashes at every step. We ascended to the top of one of the tallest cone which we found to be hollow like a chimney. From here 'we had a good view of this awfully grand pit. The volcano, which, in years gone by, must have been a mass of livid, seething fire, even then seemed that the fire had just died out. From the coves streams of melted lava seemed to be flowing. While on top of the we sat down and took lunch. All felt they were richly paid for their visit to Hale a Kala Considerable might be said in regard to the traditions of the na- some work she desired to eomplete before night came on. The native pointed out to me the very place where he was born and the spot where r this miracle should have taken place, ...on the Island of Oahu, at a village i called Wainae. The Power of v praying to death was believed in , and practied by some of the natives, . but was done secretly, as the laws of the kingdom forbid it. The law also forbade the worship of false , Gods. The natives worshipped the burning volcano on the Island of Hawaii, as a goddass, by offering sacrifices of hogs, dogs and fruits to appease her wrath and prevent her throwing, out hot lava and destroy everything it met. They called her Pilio. H. W. B. To be continued. |
