Show silver; for the appreciation of silver and its increased use as a money metal tends to lighten the weight of national and private indebtedness by increasing the supply of legal tender and non-redeemable currency. It seems probable, however, that the money power has gone as. far as it can, for the time being, in the direction direc-tion of universal gold monometallism and that a reaction, if not now at hand, may be looked for in the near future. This will naturally result frorna contraction of . the money supply in the gold standard countries, and a large increase of currency in the, , silver standard countries. In the former, merchants and manufacturers manufac-turers will continue to do business on a" falling market, while in the latter the increase of currency will bring about a gradual rise of prices, consequent intense business activity. All the progressive silver-using countries coun-tries will flourish as never before in their history, while the weaker and nonprogressive ones will be absolutely absol-utely at the mercy of the money lenders. lend-ers. This reaction will be in the interest of the silver miner, and when it onge becomes generally apparent, we may expect to see a better feeling in the silver producing sections. Meanwhile the battle of the standards stand-ards will go on, with all the greed of the usurer, all the rapacity of the monopolist, and all the cunning of on the side of gold monometallism,: opposed on the other hand by all i those whose enlightened sense of justice forbids them to add to the already well nigh hopeless burden of the toiling masses.
