Show - Fatal Mining: Accident at ItiiigKiam. George Colton, foreman of the Zelnora mine at Bingham, met a horrible death yesterday (Monday) afternoon by being blown to pieces by giant powder, a quantity of which he had placed ih a stove to, thaw out. Colton was arranging to blow up a large tree riear the mine. The powder was found , to pt frozen and he took some ten or twelve, sticks down to his cabin to thaw it out. It is supposed he placed it in the stove for in a few moments a deafening explosion occurred. Colton's partner, part-ner, Fred Austin, was the first to reach- the scene. The cabin was literally blown to pieces' and . in their midst :lay Colton Hearing his partner approaching,' he 'called out, "Oh, Fred,"'and these were the. last words he uttered. Austin ran back to the other men for help and returned re-turned immediately. He found that Colton had crawled out on the dump, some distance away. Both of his hands were blown from the arms, his eyes were blown from their sockets and he was otherwise terribly terri-bly injured.. He lived abouttwenty minutes. Deceased was married and had. five children. He was a member mem-ber .of lodge No. ic Ai O. U. W. of this city. .His remains were taken charge of:by the Bingham lodge and will be buried by . the order. Salt Lake "Tribune. . . . |
