Show INTERNATIONAL BIMETALLISM. Would Be Hastened, - Not Retarded, by Independent Action Here. On of the points . made against 1 the action of the democratic party in declaring for the free coinage of gold and silver at the ratio of sixteen six-teen to one by those who are try- j ing to retain a monetary system which experience shows has work-! ed badly and threatens to become worse and more oppressive to the people, instead of better, is that the cause of international bimetallism bimetal-lism has received a fearful blow, and that the progress'of the movement move-ment has been seriously retarded,, if not entirely stopped. , , All democrats supporting the cause of the free coinage of silver and gold want international bimetallism, bime-tallism, but the protest raised at Chicago, coming straight from the people, demands that the .United States shall take the initiative, shall show that there is no necessity neces-sity for further delay, that a positive pos-itive and emphatic movement must be made in order to impress upon European nations that we are in earnest, and that if they wish, to aid in the restoration of silver to its proper use and place among the moneys of the s world they now have the opportunity. The opponents of free gold 'and silver bimetallism are scattering scare stories to the effect that this democratic ; demand has killed bimetallism in Europe, but Senator Allison, who is a republican leader, is of the contrary opinion and expresses ex-presses the belief that an international interna-tional agreement is not far distant. He evidently does not believe the democratic demand for free coinage coin-age of gold and silver has killed international bimetallism. Nashville Nash-ville American. . i ' ' |
