Speaking of caricatures The Church should send Rrotlir Ileber. J. Grunt on & mission to the Fiji Islands. His desire to talk would then Iw directed in useful channels. It looks us though our Uncle Samuil were taking this I'bili-ine I'bili-ine business seriously. Fully half the navy, and a respectable portion of tlio army will soon be in the far East. Now its the Burlington railroad rail-road which is to build from Denver to Salt Lake, by way ol tlfe Uintah country. Let'er'come; and she ll nave to come ny wiu of Hobble creek canyon and Kpringville. Sheriff Storrs is still upon the truil of the Pelican Point mur-ilerer. mur-ilerer. Tirelessly he chases him from one place te another over the country, keeping the criminal crim-inal ulways at the "'move on" point. The last development was the bringing to Utah fioin New York of the murderer's wife. George will bag his man, and don't you forget it. This man, Wm. J. Bryan, seems to he at eoine distance in the rear of the timos Two years ago he was seemingly all right a brilliant, original, enterprising sort of a fellow. Since he lolt the army he has done nothing but listen to Mr. McKinley s dec larations of policy, and llion to go on record us being "I'eniinet" them. Why not deeUro a few new ones of your own, Mr. Bryan, and lot Mac get "fer itinst"? The proposition that, the insane and criminally inclined should not marry advanced by Ellu Wheeler-Wilcox in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, is growing in favor among thinking people Occasionally, however, some voting person who has only skirted the borderland of crime may be saved as a brand from the burning by one of the opposite sex in a marriage under eucli unfavorable conditions. Such exceptions, perhaps, prove the rule. Cards nre out announcing the annual reunion of the Home Guards and Minute Men. This office received n kind invitation. in-vitation. The editor may attend. This is a cork in' hard winter on society leaders in Springville. Last winter we mude a fairly presentable appearance in society soci-ety on an income of $7 per month, but it don't go this year. Springville's Ward McAllister has raised the limit to $9. If we can get our dress auitout of bock and can borrow a biled shirt, we will be with the braveGuards and Minute Men. Here's luck, anyway. FUSTEli IV Ji 'THE SENATE. Now that the Legislature is in eefsion, the Independent ries to place in nomination for the off.ee of United Stales Senator, Iviitor Warren Foster, of Salt Lake. We haven't known Mr Foster very long, but are under the impression thut he is all right. The Legislature of coiirsi, is Democratic and will therefore have no time for Mr. Foster's candidacy. We feel to raise our voice in his behalf, how-jver, and would respectfully Urge the following reasons for his nomination nom-ination : He is a clean man, not having a record wiih tattered explan at ions and patches of whitewash clinging to it. He is n newspaper man, and .herefore has no money with which tii huv his wav into the Senate. ' lie is a Socialist, and the cor- porations therefore have no use for him. Ho is a free thinker; therefore the Mormons wouldn't like him. Being a free thinker, the Presbyterians, Methodists, Bap-tints Bap-tints and Congrt-gationalisls tii-i i i . i wouin iiKe mm a wimie lot - than the Mormons (Note T 1 j lells maintained by the churches iue full of free thinkers .) He is a Socialist, and the Democrats won't like him bo- cau-e he preaches a purer silver doctrine than they do. Being a .Socialist, the Repub licans won't like him because he preaches silver doctrine, per h His election would tend to bring about en era of peace, as it vvouhl save Messrs, Kins:, McCune, Powers, Cannon, et al, much strife and contention. Being a Socialist, the com mon people would not care for tint, his discourses of ideal social systems Mid governments being beyond their understanding. understand-ing. He is a man of whom Ileber Grant has as yet said noth ing. Having no party or cabul to especially please, be would do his work as it should be done. The senatorial properties of the eastern trusts and corporations corpor-ations wouldn't like him, but he wouldn't cure for that. In fiu t, he would no doubt do a (rifle occasionally to develope (hat, feeling ol dislike. The Senate chamber would experience an agreeable shock of surprise at having within itself a man whose mind and soul were not in hock to some body or something. The above seem to us good and substantial reasons for send ing Warren to the Senate. We don't opectthe Legislature to pay any attention to these few rematks. What we want and ought lo have are not usually what we get. We would dislike very much to see Utah send to the United States Congress a man with his soul in hock to the priests, or a man on whose limbs rattled the chains which bound him to railroad corporations. Springvilie has lung had an enviable envi-able reputation fur the general so-biiety so-biiety of its citizens, and for their attitude on the saloon question. Few places in all thereat west have -o long resisted the arguments and interests in-terests of those who are in favor of the open saloon as have the citizens of Springviile. This fact is known throughout the State, and has created a most favorable impression anion,; the better class of people, many of whom regard our little city as a desirable desir-able place of residence on this account. It is a desirable thing to tuaiutain such a .epu-tation .epu-tation and one earned with no little atTort and with eterintl vigilance. 'I'll is is a question that every citizen must help answer, and must help answer every month in the year. The saloon interi st Is ever on the alert, and is. -.watching every opportunity oppor-tunity to get a hold in every temperance temper-ance community. If this almost all powerful interest, and its allies, can discredit, the efforts of the people to keep out the saloon, by making the people believe the saloon is not worse than the disreputable and illegal sale of intoxicants which too frequently plague and annoy all good citizens, it will have gained an important point, lint it is to lie hoped that the people will not be deceived by any such sophistry soph-istry as t his. While it is true that there aie sjinc men, who for the sake of money, are willing to take the risk, and engage in the secret and illegal ti attic of whiskey, and while theie aie always others who are glad to patronize patron-ize such dealers, the number of the latter class is few compared with those who would srrentl their time and money in thesaloon and billiard room if we had them in town. We ought to enforce t tie law so vigorously as to make it a terror to those who buy, as well as to those who sell the stuff contrary con-trary to the law. We ought, to resist just us vigorously every attempt made to bring the saloon iuto our town. Where one mother has sleepless nights at present waiting for her boy, and wondering whether he is at the "joint," there would be ten such uu-happy uu-happy mottmrs if we had the open saloon. Where one husband and father now spends his earnings which should go to make home comfortable and happy, there would he ten such if we had the open saloon. Who wants thesaloon? I. N. S.
