Polling Places Named and Election Judges AppoInted.-BUls Allowed Street Sprinkling Cart Pulled Off. The regular meeting of the City Council was held on Tuesday evening this week, a quorum not being present pre-sent Monday evening. The City fathers were all present, with Mayor Deal presiding. Verbal report of Mr. Hall on Skel-ton, Skel-ton, Maesar & Co's bid for printing for two polling places. Mr. Hall bad secured an addition of matter for there more polling places at an addi tional expense of $8. Supplemental report of Sexton Manwaring to Sept. 30 showed the death of one male infant, and one lot sold for $5. The following bills were then allowed allow-ed and appropriations made: Jas. E. Hall, services $21.00 Alex Robertson, services 22.50 H. T. Reynolds, services lu.iO T. C. Haoford, witness fees in Hannah Rechnitzer case . 4.20 Deal Bros. & Mendenhall; insurance insur-ance and sundries 38.10 Star Printing Co. 12 copies election elec-tion laws 3.00 A.L. Dal ton, irrigating old cemetery cem-etery 4.50 JohnConover, sprinkling streets 31.25 Water tax on City Hall square.. 1.80 Mr. Conover's bill of $37.50 to Oct. 24 was cut down to $31.25 to date. On motion of Mr. Hall the committee on Public Improvements was instructed in-structed to pull the cart off the streets for the season. The water tax of $1.80 assessed against the City Hall square created no little amusement, but the fathers finally concluded to pay it rather than risk Watermaster Lee's selling the " eqoare. - vv'" ' "" Bill of Watermaster Lee and deputies depu-ties in the amount of $783 was accepted accept-ed and allowed. Roylance, John II. Lee. The compensation of registrars and Judges of election was fixed at $2 per day. The following polling places were designated: No. 1-Elders Hall. No. 2 Second Ward School House. No. 3-City Hall. No. 4 Fourth Ward School House. No. 6 Central School building at Maplcton. Adjourned until Monday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p. in. The new electric light plant was tested Tuesday evening and worked like a charm, the city being lighted up for a few minutes, which caused a thrill of joy to pervade the anatomy of the City Fathers and a consider able number of the citizens as well The next night the lights were run until about 10 o'clock, but on Thurs day night they were not run on ac count of it being so cold, and the windows and doors of the power house not being in, Payson may well feel proud to be in possession of the plant and the City Fathers deserre much praise for bringing about such a result. re-sult. Carrie Reynolds & Bird Sumsion, Editors. After the present issue, school news will be a distinct department in our town paper. The object f this is two-fold. First, it will give us, as students, practice in the construction of brief, clear sentences and paragraphs; para-graphs; and, second, as the newspaper is recognized as being one of the greatest factors In educating the mass of the people, we wish to use it as one of our sources of education. The primary teachers are giving special attention to the subject of reading. The results are not obtained as for- triefly hy the A B C method, tut each word is learned as a whole. With this comes the sentence method, and when successfully given at the end of ten weeks, the change is made from script to print. Then the names of the letters may be given. School was dismissed Friday last for the purpose of teachers visiting other schools to gain new ideas. Their report was that our school is among the lead. The teachers ara arranging a col lection of songs to be printed in book form and used by the pupils. The estimated cost is five cents a copy. Chester Deal has been absent the past week on account of illness. We hope to welcome him back iji the near future. Prof. Reese of Spanish Fork schools will lecture to the students Friday in our general exercises. All are in vited. Parents are invited to an "old time spelling match" between the seventh and eighth grades, Friday afternoon. The finance committee of the sixth grade have succeeded in collecting enough money to decorate their room. The eighth grade is studying litera ture this term, and will soon begin the study of geology. The order is now almost perfect, there being but twelve who have disobeyed dis-obeyed the rules. Next Saturday Night's Bill is One of Webber's Great Hits. On Saturday evening a home talent company under the direction of Miss Pearl Ethier will present at the City Hall a piece which used to be one of Webber's great hits, i. e.,"A Woman's Bitter Atonement." NEPHI KINDRED DEAD. Typhoid Fever Does Fatal Work. the WAS A SUBSTANTIAL CITIZEN. Funeral Was Held Sunday From the Meeting House. Deceased Was a Member of the A. O. U. W. Lodge. Nephl Kindred passed away to the great beyond last Friday evening at 9 o'clock, after an illness of four weeks. The cnuse of death was typhoid fever. The funeral services were held at the Latter Day Saints meeting house Sunday, at 3 o'clock. Services were conducted by Bishop Hill of the Third Ward. Members of the A. O. U. W. lodge at Provo, of which order the deceased was a member, acted as pall bearers, and carried the corpse from the residence to the meeting house, and after the ceremonies at the church, the members of the order in their carriages went ahead of the heurse in the funeral procession on its way to the Evergreen Cemetery, where the deceased was laid at rest. Nephl Kindred was born in Spring-ville, Spring-ville, February 20, 1803, and was 34 years of age. The greater part of bis life has been spent in the city of his birth, and few, if any, can boast of more friends than could he. For years he worked industriously at his trade and had built up the reputation reputa-tion of being one of Springville's solid citizens, ne will be missed In the public life of Spiingville, as well as by his wife and three little children whom he leaves behind. His family will receive $2000 from the A. O. U. W. order, this being the amount of insurance he carried. GRAND BALL AT REYNOLDS', Will be Field Tomorrow Evening in the Interest of the Fourth ; . Ward Fair. The Fourth Ward Fair committee will give a grand ball in tho Reynolds Rey-nolds hall, Friday evening, Oct. 22. SAFECRACKED AT PAYSON. The Rio Grande Western Loses 850 Tuesday Night. Buridars enterod the Rio Grande Western station at Payson Tuesday uight by saashing in the door, and blew open the Rio Grande company's safe with giant powder, after drilling a large hole in the safe door. Less than $50 was taken. Everything was one mass of rubbish and confusion in the room when the agent went to bis fwork Irilhe morning." IIe found two money packages ;on tne floor among tho mass, which .were thrown from the safe and overlooked by theroh bera. The safe is a total wreck. No trace of the robbers has betn found, but the tools, were left on the floor, which are now in the possession of Sheriff Storrs and Brown, who are lookliiginto probabilities of trace. Mysterious looking persons were noticed about the station about dark Tuesday night. This is the second blow-out and the fourth robbery for the Rio Grande Western company's station at Payson. It is time a guard was kept. The nearest house is about fifty yards away from the station. No noise was heard during the night. Lost Between Springville and Provo, Sunday morning, a hand bag belonging to Mrs. A. M. Johnstone. It contained an amount of money, some papers, one of which a New York address. The Citizens' Ticket has been play ing in bard luck since the primary a week ago, but is now safely launched. Recent defections among its members are now made good, and everything is ready for the battle of Nora-ber Nora-ber 2nd. The first trouble to overtake it was the resignation of H, T. Reynolds, as related in last weeks Independent. Mr. Reynolds was to have led the light, but re-consulered, and conclud ed to stay with the Democratic ticket. His reasons were given at length in last week's paper. Geo. Maycock was a Citizens' nom inee for the Council, but he also re pented. The reason he assigned was that he did not wish to run for oftiee; he believed, however, in the nonpartisan non-partisan movement and would support the ticket.
