If TiiK Democrats du not put up a silver man for President what on earth will they do for sueee.-sV Five and one-half mills on the dollar is the tax rate of Sprinjfville. Show a less tax rate in the West ami we'll treat. The Republicans will never dare to put a McKinley tariff rate on commodities com-modities and the situation no says "if you don't withdraw your hostility to silver your name is Dentil." Wk trust the County court will not pigeonhole the petition from Lake Shore citizens asking for a road through Spring villc. Their cries should be listened t with just as much attention as though they were represented by a selectman from their burg. The road is a necessity; let's have It. Tiie J NiijjrK.NDKNT is indeed grateful grate-ful to its patrons for the encouraging support shown. It is intensified when a survey of the Journalistic Held is taken and the limited advertising is noted, the distiess signals shown, (calls for money, etc.), the many to iubs tones grimly arising, the changes of management, politics, etc., all of which prove to the encouraged editor that Springville is all right its people peo-ple appreciate their paper. The abutments for our bridge are up and a creditable job is done. The County court committee very properly gave the contract to a Springville gentleman Mr. Andrew Berkley who has acquitted himself grandly. The work (considering material furnished) furn-ished) is above criticism -the full 18x143 feet Is without a curve or projection, pro-jection, and stones weighing from 1 to 1,000 pounds have been used, there being enough large ones to Insure its standing for general ions to come. TitK Nephi Blade loses its versatile writer, Mr. J. F. Gibbs. We certainly cer-tainly regret exceedingly to see hi m retire from the tripod and cannot but think it Is because he went to Nephi, the banner town in Utah to kill of! or drive out enterprising men. It is the birth or breeding place of some of our most enterprising men of Utah, but they, as was Gibbs, are forced to find less arid Holds to expand in. The following are the pungeut reasons given by Brother Gibbs for leaving Nephi and the field of Journalism: "The causes that have Induced us to part with The Blade are many, the principal one Is fouud iu the diflleulty of making collections over so w ide a territory, and the exacting and unceasing un-ceasing attention to details that became be-came a burden that has been well-nigh well-nigh unbcarabel. It will be a relief to once more get beyond the reach of Imperative calls for 'copy'". Messrs. E. II. Fulvemnd Alfred Orine arc the young men who succeed Mr. Gibbs. They are well-known gentlemen, practical printers, and best of all are Nepal boys, who will corral all the business thure is there, and If there is any hope for a newspaper in Nephi they are surely entitled to it. SILVERS ONLY RESOURCE- One of the most lamentable incidents inci-dents of the recent campaign was the defeat of Senator Blackburn of Kentucky, Ken-tucky, and the following extract from a letter from Wellington is interesting interest-ing for several reasons, but chiefly because it shown what the gold-bugs have done and what they will do: Considerable interest was aroused both in- Congressional and administration adminis-tration circles by the publication of a telegram saving that Senator Black burn would lie re-elected to the Senate by the votes of the two Populist Popu-list members of the Kentucky legislature. legisla-ture. Populists have expressed the opinion ever since the result of the Kent ucky election was known that if lllaekbiiru r.uild get the solid support of all the Democratic members of the legislature he could be re-elected, because be-cause the two Populists would rather vote for lil in, on account of his silver views, than for any man the Republicans Republi-cans would be likely to put up, but they did not, and do not now believe that Mr. Illackburn can get the support sup-port of all the Democrats. It is an open seen t in Washington that President Cleveland and Secretary Carlisle made it plain during the campaign that they would rather see a Republican sent to the Senate from Kentucky than to see Mr. Illackburn re-elected, and if they haven't changed their minds they can certainly cer-tainly control the votes of enough' Democrat n- members of the Kentucky legislature to prevent Blackburn's reelection re-election even should sevwal Republicans Republi-cans join the two Populists in voting for It i in. Now the only way for the free-coiuuge free-coiuuge people to get even with the goldoeracy is to vote only for sliver men. If the Republican and Democratic Dem-ocratic candidates are both gold-bugs all silver men should unite on one man and one platform. In Kentucky the Populists voted their party ticket and consequently voted to a certain extentagainst Blackburn and Hardin, and as a result the gold-bug Rej ub-licans ub-licans and Democrats of Kentucky had everything their own way and the defeat of the silver men followed as a matter of course. Now if the Democrats had united with the Populists Popu-lists on the Populistic ticket the result would have been different and Blackburn could have been easily elected. . The trouble Is that men arc too prone to work for party in prefer ence to principle, and as long as they do the silver cause will go down be fore the united efforts of the gold- bugs as it did in Kentucky. Pook Provo! She has all the natu ral conditions for being a great town but she lias been boomed to death, as it were, or at least made awfully sick. In her wriggling to get a rest from bond clippers, demands for interest, and Bishop Tanner calls for economy, econ-omy, they scarce know what to do. Now a great (?) stagger at so-called economy is made wherein efficient men are to have their salaries cut again. They had them cut about two years ago to extremely low rates. Mayor llolbrook is a monument of enterprise and good judgment and is evidently sorely ashamed of his mu nicipal family again. The last time he gave them a severe rebuke for their false economy by boldly proposing propos-ing to pay for their electric lights oue year. They meekly acquiesced and for nearly a year suffered this martyr to carry his burden alone. Now he vainly calls for a halt on the proposed scheme to make efficient help pay the running expenses by a shameful reduction of their salaries, but the bewildered, or stubborn Councilors i tt. The anxious Councilors of our neighboring town ought to realize that cheap men are not always good men, and if they monkey with the salarie? too much they may wake up some day and And their economy decideoly expenive to say nothing of the spectacle oT a town running with as high an interest-paying rate as they do and witfi incompetent incom-petent men to grapple with the situation. TnAT Springville is one of the typical typ-ical American towns is evinced bv the results of the late fair. In the first place those who were intrusted with Its management found a most willing public to assist in grappling witn tne stupenduous enterprise. Had they been alone, the magnitude of the fair would have dwindled down to a mere country fair or ward bazar; as it was, it blossomed out as an enterprise that would not put Salt Lake City to s'laine, and any town in Utah, too, would have almost burst with pride. There are few citizens, if any, who did not attend the fair with their families and nearly everyone contributed contrib-uted to the exhibits in some way or other. At the conclusion of the session an inventory of the door and booth receipts it was found that not over $1. 50 was paid in anything but cash an unheard of event in any Utah town except mining camps.
