VOLUME .14 NUMBER 16: SPRINGVILLE, UTAH, Ti-T'lDAY, DEC. 31, 1903 PIUCE, $1.25 PFAl ANNUM ; - The Light Shines- On Tuesday evening the electric elec-tric light plant was stalled and everything worked excellently. Only the street lights were connected con-nected and the novel sight called call-ed hundreds of our citizens to the streets to view and comment upon the new era dawning upon our City. Artillerist George Huntington, fired several volleys vol-leys that made the hill.-Jresound. Bands serenaded the City and there was general rejoicing. Thos. Coppin is engineer and Bavard Johnson will act as assistant. J. J. McAfee is electrician. On Wednesday evening lights were turned into homes that were wired ready. Everything seems to work well, as it should, for the plant is of the latest pattern. There is plenty of water and to spare at this time, and no water was turned in from the right hand fork. The plant has - cost a trifle over $30,000. It will take about 750 lights to pay running expenses and all over that number num-ber goes to pay the indebtedness. indebted-ness. It is now up to the people to take the light. The more that is taken the sooner it will be paid for, and when fully paid for the people, will have a cheaper cheap-er light and a SGtirce of revenue. Let us all take hold ana make the burden lighter. Progesi Eaising Babies the the the and Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications as they cannot reach the deseased portion of the ear, There is only one way to cure deaf ness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lin A woman just a hundred years old, who died, the other! day, gave another of those frequent fre-quent opportunities for reminding remind-ing us how brief is the span of modern times the times of the diffusion of intelligence and comfort and aspiration. The poet3 may sing, the romancers may dream, classicists may contrast con-trast these sordid times with the glories of the day that was. But the plain, material tale of a long lifetime's span of science puts them all down. No won der the man of the past lifted his eyes more frequently to the hazy star depths if he did. There lay his only hope; the present, his environment, was dismal at best, despairing at worst. And his few joys made him ecstatic. If we saw the sun only once a year for ;i few hours, what a stir we would make about it! In New York where there are more beautiful days and fewer disagreeable than in any other great city of the world, there is more wailing and whining over a spell of disagreeable disagree-able weather than there is in British Columbia where people slop around in rain, sleet, snow, and fog almost all the time. There is strong reason to ' suspect sus-pect that the world has improved improv-ed in the last few years far faster fast-er than its inhabitants. They seem to be somewhat like a crowd of workmen who have built themselves a palace, and have moved in before they had learned how to live in a palace. We still keep on fighting savagely sav-agely for food, clothing,- and shelter as our forefathers did, Hospital methods are adopted more each year in the private treatment of babies the methods, meth-ods, that is to say, of the superior super-ior modern hopital, conducted under the best medical supervision. supervi-sion. The cradle is doomed, and all its rocking memories. The child lies upon its bed, and not picked up and carried about the room, even when it yells-. Visitors Vis-itors and relatives are no longer encouraged to pound it in the ribs, pinch its chin, or transfer mich robes to its lips. This strictness is laughed at by ribald outsiders and resented by relics of the old reirime, which, like every other fossil, is attributed to nature, no doubt with justice, but without much relevance, Actually, .this intelligent treat ment of infancy is doing much to check nervousness in our children, to protect them from bad habits and needless exact ions, and to make them self reliant. re-liant. Babyhood, indeed, is the best conducted age at present. When the child grows older it meets undoubted loss in the substitution sub-stitution of nurse's for motner's care, a tendency encouraged by the new activities of women by city life. At the beginning, how ever, in the first weeks "und months of its existeuce, when change and development are more rapid than at any other period, the human being has never had such a decent treatment treat-ment as it is the happy fashion to bestow upon him now. Heis treated for his pwn -.welfare instead in-stead of the amusement of his friends Collier's Weekly.
