ANNUM SPMNGVIIJjE - 4 ' YOU PAY YOUR MONEY YOU TAKE YOUR CHOICE George Sutherland and Joseph Howels for the Republican?. Joseph Ii, Rawlins and Will King for the Democrats The opening rally of (he campaign, cam-paign, held last Friday evening by the Republicans, was well at-jCily Hall Saturday evening, tended, full of enthusiasm, and j There were about as many presentment pres-entment for the large audi-;ent as on the previous night, ence. Judge Dougall wielded : u ,;.), would seem to indicate the gavel and introduced the j that one party is manifesting speakers. The Brown sisters j about as much interest in polit-sang polit-sang for the opening, which was j jcai niattt rs, in our precinct, as much appreciated and warmly applauded. Louis M. Cannon spoke for a few moments, giving some reasons why he was a Republican, Re-publican, and why the ticket of the G. O. P. should prevail at the November election. Hon. Joseph Howels was the second speaker. He dwelt principally upon Democratic promises and failures, They had pledged, in 1892, if elected, to bring greater prosperity than then existed; and called attention to the wreched years from 1893 to 1896, silent factories, industry paralyzed para-lyzed and the vast armies of honest hon-est nen out of employment, because be-cause of the free 'trade heresies, introduced by the party who said "vote for Grover, live in closer." Many had lived in clover, but it was only when weary of tramping in search of employment they had crawled into some fanners field, for a few hours sleep in his clover patch. He called attention to the fact, of how quickly good limes came at the election of 1S96, and how they had continued contin-ued up to the present time. He specially called to recollection the fact that the free trade bill which took a Democratic congress lSJ months to pass, failed to protect American industries in-dustries or afford revenue, and Ijuw that party that ha0 prom- wol tutfr time-i in I. ha II 1 thought of, were compelled to borrow $202,000,000 to crry the urreut epetises of t)4e government. gov-ernment. He admitted that there were evils in the govern: inent, but that the Republicans were the pU'ty that could le trusted to rectify and adjust those evils, as it was the party that had met ami handled successfully suc-cessfully all the great problems of the past forty-two years. Representative Sutherland was introduced, who said in part: The Democrats always have paramount issues;. In I860 it was State Rights; the great war settled that question. In 1864 it.was, the was i sa failure; which was answered soon after at Ap- pomatox. In 1878 it was reconstruction; recon-struction; the South was recon structed bv the plans of the Re publican party. In 1892 their paramount issue was tarifF for revenue only. The Democrats won. and what was the result? insufficient tariff for revenue and none for protection. 1896 their cry was for Free Silver and the voters answered that ques tion by electing Wm McKinlly In 1900 it was Imperialism; you know how that was met and set tled. The Republicans have been right on all those great questions, and they are right on the present issues, and will settle them right. Now in regard to theSrusts; which party is more liable to regulate them? In 18S8 A Democratic committee inves tigated the trust question and reported that great trusts exist ed, but suggested no remedy and recommended that a subse quent consress be left to dea with the matter. The next con gress, which was Republican did pass the Sherman Anti-trust lay, which was effective in sup pressing the then existing evils, in the trust line, bince then the great combines have so incorporated in-corporated in a way to evade the penalties of the Sherman act, so that it will take an amendment to the Constitution giving the government power to regulate the trusts. Such an amendment amend-ment was introduced two years agi, but defeated by democratic votes. He refered to the Philippines Philip-pines and what had been done for them iu an educational way. In 1898 but 3000 children were enrolled in the'schools, this year there were 200.000.He said, the cruelties attributed to our sold iers had been very much over drawn, and the soldiers' side not given, to show the terrible atro Tlis Democratic party of the City held their first rally at the the other. Henry Roylance, chairman, introduced ihe Hon. J. L. Rawlins, Raw-lins, who spoke in part as follows: fol-lows: Judge King made a good record re-cord while iu Congress, and if you return him he will continue contin-ue the good wwik. The people of Utah would still have been knocking for admissiou into the Union if it had not been for the work of the Democratic party. Why should Judge King be turned turn-ed down because he is not in accord ac-cord with the Administration? A Democratic statesman can get legislation for Utah as well as a Republican. When the finau-ceers finau-ceers of the world tried to enslave en-slave the world, by destroying silver, the people of Utah turned to the Democratic party , in the free silver cause. Will any man tell of a single act, for the well-fare well-fare of Utah, that had a Republican Repub-lican author? For any utterance utter-ance I have made iu the Senate, in relation to the policy of our Government, in the Philippines, or the cruelties inflicted upon helpless prisoners, I have no apology to offer. The War Department De-partment tried to su ppress the information in relation to the tortures inflicted upon prisoners but the Democrats insisted that the matter be investigated; the evidence proving the cruelties was establish ' and the nerpe- . 1 XJ upon to give ibis publicity, and I have no regrets for mv action. Publicity is the only w y o pre vent the continuance ot evil acts, or the people will do justice to all when the truth is muJe pub lie. follows: This Govei uuieiit was formed as a protest against im perialism and colonial possesions Tae Democratic party stands upon the Declaration and the Constitution. The Republicans iu violation of the teachings of Lincoln are attempting to estab lish colonies. The Democrats say; the Constitution follows the Flag. The Republicans have gone to the Philippines and say; the Constitution does not extend there. I denounce the imperial tendencies of the Republican party! When Aguinaldo sent an agent here to see Pres. Mc-Kinley, Mc-Kinley, he was denied the privilege, privi-lege, and was trailed by the sleuths of the law. to such an extent, ex-tent, that he was compelled to flee to Canada. We are in the Philippines wrongfully. I am more concerned for our Country than I am for the Philippines, for colonial possessions are dan gerous. If we can go to those islands we can go and conquer Australia, Mexico and other coun tries and bring them under our dominion. Herod had as much right to slaughter all the chil dren under three years old, as we have to kill and slaughter in the Philippines. True, we may be more merciful than Herod, but may in our ambition, be led on, step by step until our Government Gov-ernment is destroyed. We pillared pillar-ed Wyler for his atrocities in Cuba, and practiced the same in Samar. If Cuba is fit for self government why not the Philip- les? We are not there for philantropic purposes, but- for mercenary; to form lumber trusts and steal their lands. The Re publicans say, we will lift them up. Did Spain lift them up? She is a Christian nation. We cannot help the people; they must help themselves. Governments Govern-ments are made from within and not from without. It i3 not fair to charge the hard times of '93 to the Democratic party; it was the fault of the gold ring, that attempted to contract the currency. Why don't the Re publicans suppress the trusts? They have the power. We do not need a Consitutional amend ing. I voted against the propo Joe Trigg Says: I have a friend who is always a little behind always behind in meeting his financial obligations behind in meeting appointments appoint-ments at specified hours, behind in getting in his crops, caring for them, and harvesting then:.
