CRITICAL STATE OF AFFAIRS AT PORTO CABELL0, VENEZUELA German Have I-anrfed Murines and Uncle Sam TV til Follow Suit. Minister Bowen has cabled the state department from Caracas, Venezuela, that the revolutionists have cut the cable at Barcelona. Minister Bowen says the cable was cut immediately after the receipt of a message stating that the revolutionists were entering the city. Minister Bowen also advised the state department that the Germans intend to land a naval force at Porto Cabello to protect German interests there, which are threatened by the uprising up-rising now in progress. The minister advised that we follow suit. After a conference between the officials of the, state and navy departments, instructions instruc-tions were cabled to Commander Nicholas Nicho-las of the Topeka to proceed from Laguayara to Porto Cabello and to land a naval force in case of attack. The Topeka has already left for Porto Cabello. The troubleat Porto Cabello grows out of the uprising that has convulsed Venezuela for some time. It is directed di-rected against President Castro and has kept the country in a state of ferment fer-ment for many months. Our consul at Porto Cabello sent word recently that the lives of some of the Ameriean residents, including members of his family, were imperilled, ana two of the ladies of the consul's family were taken away in a government govern-ment ship. Since then there has been no word of a critical condition of affairs, af-fairs, but the dispatch of today indicates indi-cates that a crisis has been reached. There appears to be no question as to the right of the German naval forces to land for the protection of German interests. It in no way involves the Monroe doctrine. Germany has been keeping close watch on Venezuela for some' months, and at one time contemplated contem-plated taking a Venezuelan port in order to compel the payment of certain German claims. It was in that connection 'that the German ambassador at Washington, Dr. Von Hollenben, made inquiry of President Roosevelt and the state department de-partment as to whether such a move by Germany for the sole purpose of collecting' col-lecting' a claim, and not for the purpose of territorial expansion, would meet with any disfavor by the American government. The response of the United States left Germany free to act, as the assurance that no territorial extension was intended removed the case from the operations of the Monroe doctrine. The present landing of a German force has no connection with Germany's Ger-many's former movement against Ven-ezeula, Ven-ezeula, although the assurances heretofore hereto-fore gien by Germany serve in the present case to show that there is no ulterior purpose behind the protection of German interests at Porto Cabello. KENNIFFS RUN DOWN. Notorious New Zealand Outlaws Captured at Last. Victoria, B. The horses wandered wan-dered back to the police camp and the hunt was continued with renewed energy. en-ergy. The outlaws were surprised iu their camp, their horses were shot so that they had to take to the woods on foot. One stumbled and fell as he was running, and was captured without any difficulty. In one district the residents resi-dents erected an arch of sheep skulls on the occasion of the vis.t of one of the cabinet ministers. Strikers Kald Farms and Troops Will be Called t'poo to Protect Agriculturalists. Complaint has been made to brigade headquarters that strickers are foraging forag-ing in the rich agricultural district north of Shenandoah, Pa. The life of one farmer has been threatened because be-cause he attempted to protect his property prop-erty and the raids have reached such serious proportions that the farmers are preparing to take some concerted action to stop further, depredation. It is not unlikely that cavalry will be sent into the district at once to stop the raids. Alaskan Volcanoes Belching Ashes. Mounts Redoubt, Ilmiana and Au-gustin, Au-gustin, in the Cook Inlet section, Alaska, continue to emit smoke. All three peaks were active while the steamer Santa Ana,- which has arrived from the northwest, was at Cooks Inlet. In-let. "It was a pretty sight," Capt. An-drason An-drason said. "We were in full view of all three peaks, the farthest being not more than fifty miles distant. The smoke did not appear to be very dense, but enough ashes have been scattered over the covered peaks to almost blacken black-en the white surface." DISAPPROVED BY VATICAN. Friars Must Account to Church for Sale of Their Lands. The selling by the Philippine friars of their lands to syndicates of laymen is disapproved at the Vatican. When the sales are definitely ascertained the friars will be obliged to show the amount received by them and reimburse the church. . EDWARD IS CROWNED KINO. YH0LS CEREMONIAL OF MAGNIFICENT DECORATIVE CHARACTER. Foreign Princes, Embassadors, Colonial .Rulers and Indian Potentates Witness Wit-ness the Ceremony. King Edward and Queen Alexander were crowned in Westminister abbey shortly after noon Saturday. Though the ceremony was bereft of some of the elaboration and pageantry originally or-iginally contemplated, it lacked little in the way of spectacular perfection. The whole ceremonial was of a magnificently mag-nificently decorative character and presented a constantly changing panorama pan-orama round the two central figures enthroned in their robes of velvet, ermine er-mine and cloth of gold, amidst the distinguished dis-tinguished assemblage of actors, the fulfillment of whose various roles necessitated ne-cessitated constant movement. Each Stage of the ceremony, with its old world usages,' furnisheu its quota of interest, while the interior of the church, filled as it was with officiating prelates in vari-colored capes, with princes and diplomats, officers in gold-laced gold-laced uniforms, with heralds, pursuvi-ants pursuvi-ants and other officers of state in mediaeval me-diaeval costumes, with peers and peeresses peer-esses in rich robes, with Oriental potentates po-tentates in raany-hued raiment, with men of all types and all shades of complexion com-plexion from distant points of the new-crowned new-crowned monarch's empire, with its dazzling display of jewels and wealth of color, presented a picture which in its combined brilliancy and distinction has seldom been excelled. The king looked pale and rather drawn, and was by no means as strong and robust as previous reports had led one to expect, and while punctiliously bowing from side to side, he did so with a gravity very unusual to him. He seemed to sit rather far back in the carriage and moved his body very little. His crimson robes and cape doubtless gave him the unusual appearance. ap-pearance. The queen, beside him, was radiant. She never looked beetter. The cheers which greeted the pair were loud and unmistakably genuine and very different from the perfunctory applause which usually greets the appearance ap-pearance of members of the royal family. The king was crowned at 12:39 p. m., the queen at 12:55 p. m. Tke head of the procession reached the abbey at 10:50 a. m. The bells were pealed and the bands played "God Save the King.' The Prince of Wales took his place in the abbey, in a chair directly in front of the peers, at 11:12 a. m. The king and queen entered the west door of the abbey at 11:34 a. m., the choir singing, "I Was Glad When They Said Unto Me."' The king and queen, who brought up almost the rear of the procession left the palace gates at 1 a, m. amidst wild cheers, which their majesties acknowledged ac-knowledged by repeatedly bowing. Their majesties arrived at the abbey annex at 11:15 a. m. The anointing in the abbey was conducted con-ducted at 12:27 p. m. The news of the crown'ng was announced an-nounced by an official outside the abbey. ab-bey. It was received by signal through London and was received with cheers which spread througl oit the stands and crowds far up the streets, as the bells pealed joyfully. As their majesties were leaving the abbey rain commenced to fall and they deferred their departure until the rain ceased. They left at 2:06 p. m. The return journey, which was slow, was marked by scenes of enthusiasm. Lynching Narrowly Averted. News from Five Forks, a small settlement settle-ment about 120 miles northeast of Leadvillc, states that Joe Perkins, a gambler, narrowly escaped lynching there Sunday. There has been a number of incendiary incen-diary tires recently and a half dozen miners cabins were destroyed. Perkins Per-kins was suspected, as he had sworn to be revenged for being beaten at cards. He was taken from his cabin and a rope tied around his neck and then taken to the woods, where he was given giv-en a hearing. He stoutly denied having hav-ing committed the outrage, but was found guilty. The rope was thrown over a tree, but before he was pulled up cooler heads prevailed and he was given thirty minutes to leave the town. He left at once, and a number of bullets were sent whizzing after him. Seven Meet Heath In a Hotel Fire. The Land on hotel at San Angels, Texas, was destroyed by fire, seven people meeting their death. There were seventy-five persons in the house, and all of them emerged safely except the seven named and three others who have not been located but who are believed be-lieved to be safe. The seven women and children got out on a small balcony bal-cony and were appealed to to jump into blankets which were being held for them, but they failed to do so and delayed until the gallery fell back into the flames.
