Cecil Rhodes downed many an opponent, but, like the rest of us, he had to throw up his hands when death took the road. If a number of Senators are not trying to disgust the people with the whole Isthmian canal question their talk ami actions are deceptive. The Kaiser will quickly discover dis-cover that we can be firm as well as courteous, if he should be unwise un-wise enough to ask us to let him establish naval stations in American Am-erican waters. Several reasons have been given, but our guess is that the President headed off his daught er's intended coronation trip because he knows adverse public pub-lic opinion when he meets it in the road. The House fighters could get more gate money than would be needed for the most extensive Cuban relief asked for, if they would pair off and do their scrapping under the regular ring rules. WAV. A3tor, the man who be came Ashamed of his American birth kid got himself naturalized as an Englishman, is now after a seat in Parliament. If he get.-it, get.-it, our admiration for English voters will drop several points It ought to be comforting, al though we are sure it idii't, o the iellovv who always wants o borrow money, to know that a newjiational bank, which expects ex-pects to live by loaning money, is established somewhere in this country every day. Gen. Fred Funston made a bull's eye when he said: "It is perfectly proper for us to have all sorts of opinions as to what we will do with the Philippine Islands, but, for heaven's sake, let us keep them to ourselves until un-til every square inch of that territory ter-ritory recognizes the sovereignty of the U. S." The last , census gives the value of the eggs produced in the U S. in 1902 at $228,000,000. Talk, about the free coinage of silver! The hens produce more wealth each year than all the mines and several other important impor-tant industries added. Treat the hens right and they will return a hundred fold profit The bill introduced in the Senate last week, by Hon.-J. L. Rawlins, aught to pass. Il provides pro-vides for a million and quarter dollars, to pay the expences of the indian wars of 18656-7. This war cost Utah a vast amount am-ount of treasure, and was faught through by the malitia, without any aid whtaever from the government. gov-ernment. Some of our own men at that time, to our, positive kuowledge, spent over $100 for accoutrements, and spent from six to' eight months time in those three years doing military duty. It is a just measure and aught to pass without any friction. The Chinese Minister has discovered dis-covered another reign of terror among the Chinese, in Colorado, and has got the Secretary of State to ask the Governor of Colorado to look-intothe matter. He can look in or out, but if the miners union of Ouary has said the Chiuese must go from the place, we are inclined to think fiey will go. A London publisher has offer- ed Santos Dumont a prize of $20,000 to ranKe a trip from London to Birmingham, 100 miles, in his airship, without stopping., and Dumont has had the comp tition opened to the world, the airship that makes the quickest trip, takes the cash. Now'is the time to bring out your flying machines. Hon. Geo. Sutherland sent the editor hereof a stock of seeds from the Department at Washington, Wash-ington, for distribution in our City. They were duly advertized adver-tized in the columns of this pa-par, pa-par, and in one week every package pack-age w s gone. This is a very excellent ex-cellent way to make distributions, distribu-tions, as they go to people who need them and will make proper use of them. Who says people do not read the advertizing columns col-umns of the country weekly. Representative Sutherland in troduced a bill, in the House of Representatives, to attach that portion of Arizona lying north of the Colorado river, to Utah. That portion is of no value to our neighbor, as itis seperated from it by the inacoessable river, and it is now, practically "No Man's Land," only a refuge for outlaws. On the other hand it joins Utah, and is really accord-ng accord-ng to natural boundaries a part of our state. The bill aught to pass, not because we need it, but that it may be better governed and regulated, which would be a boon to both Arizona and Utah. The Origin of Pearls. The origin of pearls has been a sub-jact sub-jact of much speculation. . About 150 years ago Filippi of Turin announced that a living organism forms tlie nucleus, nuc-leus, and in a recent investigation M. Raphael Dubois, a French naturalist, has shewn tbat all pearls found in a common pearl-bearing mollusk are cysts enclosing distomes small marine ma-rine worms. In the month of August, when few pearls are obtained, the tiny young distomes, a fiftieth of an inch in diameter, are to ba seen instead in-stead as reddish-yellow pointsThese become gradually coated with carbonate carbon-ate of lime, in an early stage appearing appear-ing as black specks and later as brilliant bril-liant pearls, which remain until the following summer, when they drop to pieces and the parasite resumes activity activi-ty and reproduces its kind. Eut if the parasite dies the crust continues . to grow, a large and beautiful pearl being but the sarcophagus of a long-dead worm. Just how nearly universal this cause of the formation of pearls may be does not appear, but experiments with fresh-water pearls show an egg as nucleus. A LINGUISTIC REFORM. Schoolmasters Must Seo That Pupils "Play Football In German." According to a German correspondent correspond-ent of a contemporary, the educational authorities of the Kingdom of Wur-temberg Wur-temberg have issued an amusing order. or-der. Schoolmasters are to see that if their pupils play football, they shall at least play it in German. That Is to say, such interesting hybrid expressions expres-sions as "kicken" and "touch-linie" are to be abolished for the future, and equivalents found in orthodox German. Looked at from a cosmopolitan and impartial point of view, the alteration really seems a pity. "Kicken" is undoubtedly un-doubtedly an expression, like the "cri-quette" "cri-quette" and "bouledogue" of the sporting sport-ing Frenchman, and makes for the gayety of nations, and it is difficult to see what harm the mind of the youthful youth-ful Wurtemberger could get from It Moreover, the proposed substitute, "stossen," seems painfully inadequate and vague, not much better than the very poor spirited French equivalent "coup-de-pied." It is not necessary to suppose that this paternal legislature has decreed the abolition of the offending of-fending terms from any grounds of Anglophobia; they are probably doomed to disappear not because they are English, but because they are not German. There has been for many years a systematic plan of banishing alien words from the German "speech, and justifying the boast of a celebrated celebra-ted German that of all European languages lan-guages it alone has remained uncon-tamlnated uncon-tamlnated since the time of Tacitus. KEEP YOUR BLOOD GLEAN TUNE WAS TOO SUGGESTIVE. Automatic Musical Chair Tbat Marred . a Fmi ril'8 Solemnity. Mr. Black, a wealthy resident cf Brooklyn, who died recently, was r mav of many fads, chief among which was i mania for "machine" music that ground cut by the hand organ and the music box. As ' a visitor entered his house some secret connection with the door started the flattering strains of "Hail to the Chief," to the accom paniment of . which the astonished guest was ushered into the reception room. Clocks of every sort sounded fitting music to the passing hours; in short, every piece of furniture in the house seemed in some way to be connected con-nected with a hidden orchestra. Mr. Black's death was untimely; a hand organ with a new and wonderful combination com-bination of every orchestral instrument that blares, suddenly began a concert in front of his housed In his eagerness to examine this new musical marvel, Mr. Black tripped and fell down the long staircase, and his life paid the penalty of his final pursuit of his ideal. Before the funeral extreme care was taken to silence all the harmonies of the house. For two days the servants labored diligently disconnecting wires and removing offending furniture. At last they rested from tbeir labors and the last sad hour arrived. The exercises, exer-cises, were conducted in the house, and as the minister was concluding his panegyric on the departed a belated mourner entered and was shown to the one empty seat, a chair in an obscure ob-scure corner. Silently the late comer tiptoed to the chair and quietly sank into its depths. Instantly thore pealed forth a loud chord and then without interruption in-terruption there came forth the loud, strident notes of "There'll bo a hot time in the old town to-nigut." All efforts to silence the music were futile. fu-tile. In notes that drowned the minister min-ister and were plainly audible for bFocks the music continued and net unt.:i the last st ain had died away was the minister able to conclude his remarks. re-marks. Fog. The word "fog" has not been traced farther than the sixteenth century, but the thing was known in tbe. early years of the fourteenth. The commons, with the prelates and nobles visiting London Lon-don for the parliaments and on other occasions, united to petition Edward 1 to compel the burning only of drv wood and charcoal, as the growing use of sea coal corrupted the air with its stink and smoke to the great prejudice preju-dice and detriment of health. In 1306 the king prohibited the use of coal; heavy ransom and fines were inflicted for disobedience; in the case of recalcitrant recal-citrant brewers, dyers and other artificers arti-ficers the furnaces and kilns were, destroyed. de-stroyed. But the restriction was evidently evi-dently soon removed, for in 1308 50, (probably equal to about 800 now) was paid from the exchequer for wood and coal for the coronation of Edward II. .
