Chicago News. Published by lltyuetf Everybody knows that until recently ".the average statesman, the majority of prominent men, in Englft:4 drank to excess. Pitt was a drunkard and Pitt wa9tho most remarkable statesman in England. Fox was a drunkard. Wesley another. In fact, to write a list of England's greatest men, who lived more than a hundred years ego, would; he to make a list of famous drunkards. fc -v To day the drunkard in public life is practically unknown ill Enghuid, as well as in America. No legal pressure has been brought to bear upon the prosperous" drunkard. He was not badgered by policemen or by blue lawg. He could get all that he wanted o, drink whenever lie wanted it yet, of his own accord, the prosperous drunkard has reformed and become temperate. u- Our own great Daniel Webster was a drunkard, as were many other great Americans. No man to-day could he a drunkard and at the same time be n.greet 'man and respected. Education, experience and common sense have done their work, and drunkenness is now left to elf indulgent fools, or to those whose lives are made dull by poverty, to whom alcohol affords the only escape from horrible monotony. It would, perhaps, be worth whilu, , for the advocates of temperance to study the causes which have practically eliminated drunkenness from the most intelligent o'asses of men. Education undoubtedly is the greatest factor. In nearly all the public schools 'now the evil effects of alcohol are taught. v " These evil effects are taught, notin'a lackadaisical way, with sentiment or religious duly as a basis. They are taught as facts. Facts appeal to the mind, and they persist in their effect in later life, when moral suasion and religious appeals are forgotten. Teach every child that alcohol - destroys his chances of success, impairs his muscular efficiency, inflames the substance of the brain and prevents development make him feel that a drinking man is a second-class man, . and you will have done much t( 'destroy the drunkenness of tho future. Chicago Chi-cago Chronicle. INVALIDED BY FASHION. r V Boi'lety tib-l Overworked Trying to K-conie K-conie Accomplished. To learn as many of the fashionable accomplishments as possible appears to be the ambition of tbe girl of the period and her mamma. It is too often the case that considerations of physical physi-cal health are entirely overlooked and that the fashionable girl finds herself worn out and old In appearance and disposition before she lias reached the age of 23. The Ladies Home journal characterizes this folly properly when It says: "There are paronta who, not content with the studies which their daughters have to grapple with at school, load them down with a few special studies in the finer arts. " I have In mind now several young girls between the precarious ages of 12 and 17, who, after they return from school, have an extra dose of painting, muslo or languages. 'But my daughter must know something of these things,' is the protest of the for.d mother. 'She must be able to hold her own with other girls of her set." Of course, the girl at this tender age, with such a mental load, soon goes to pieces. She becomes be-comes anaemic, listless and nervous, and then the mother wonders why! To tulld her up everything under the sun is tried except a lessening of mental work and the unnatural strain upon tne nervous system. The girl develops Into what? A bundle of nerves Incased in the most fragile frame, her physical vitality sapped almost to the last dreg. And In this condition she enters tho marriage state! And yet we wonder why there are so few women absolutely absolute-ly free from organic troubles. Is it so Inexplicable?" . - Luek In Thirteen. liy sending. 13""milc8'' Wm.
