A HIGH LICENSE PARTY IN SPRING VILLE POLITICS For a time it seemed as if the political situation in Spring vllle would lie nimbly a struggle between the lUiJUlili-.'un and Democratic parties on straight party lines, which meant no issues whatever. Iu the last few days matters have been complicated com-plicated by the revival of the prohibition pro-hibition issue, to the exclusion of all others. A high-license, party is now in the field, and it is said has developed devel-oped sin prising strength. At the primary Friday night the Republicans put in the field a ticket pledged to the enforcement of the present very rigid prohibition ordinance. ordin-ance. This, however, steins not to have been strong enough for many of the prohiMtionists, and it U understood that the Democratic primary tonight, will make an endeavor en-deavor to corral this vote It is probable that Jus. K. Hall will be nominated for marshal on an extreme prohibition platform. On Monday 1. N; Whittker, Wilk Streepcr, Ezra Oakley and numerous others of the boys set on foot a movement move-ment for the organization of a High License party, to favor the openin.' of a saloon here. Hy Tuesday night they had secured more than the necessary tlfty voters as signers to the. allldavit required by Slate law for the formation of a new party. It is claimed that in a triangular tight they have sutik-ient strength to win. Whether the organization has hem perfected or not is not yet known, but it is reported by the leaders that they will hold a piiiuarv on Friday night. The High License people advocate the opening of a saloon under regu-; hit ions something as follows: I . 'I'l,., ..i ,.f ,. ii, ... ., .... ... , : sponsible party, who will put up a cash license in advance, together with a sufficient cash bond guaran teeing that he will observe certain regulations. President M.O.Packard was at his best. An artist has just arranged a placard which has been framed and hung in the Library. It contains the names of the donors of books to the Library, given oir Library day. May 13, 1900. It will always serve as a memento of a most happy, laudable and praiseworthy event. Through the efforts of Principal Eggertsen. thirty-five volumes were added to tin Library recently. Among them Is the proceedings of the Constitutional convention. He entered the Freshman class but a Tew months since. The funeral of Louis, the son of Mr. ii ml Mrs. John Roylance, was held last Friday. Jnhn S. Buyer, Jas. E. Any Infraction of these rules would lead to the loss of license and forfeiture of the bond, H this party places a ticket in the field, it will ni-ike the tljiht simply Prohibition vs. High License. The main object is probably to defeat Mr. Hall's candidacy for the inarshalship, though that is not openly stated by all. The saloon is claimed as the principal object to be attained. Thus far the movement is drawing from the Republican party three votes' to two from the Democrats. That means Republican defeat. Kvetl then the High License people will probably prob-ably not be able to overcome the Democratic vote, re-inforccd by the temperance votes which can lie frightened from the Republican ranks. Then again, with a High License ticket in the Held and with defeat staring them in the face, the Republicans Repub-licans will probably withdraw their ticket from the Held and throw their main stiengtli to the Duuocrats. This will result in the defeat of the new party and insure the election of Mr. Hall, for whose defeat the new party is principally being organized. nne trie saloon parly' .has fewj chances of winning, it is finding a surprising number of converts among former very ardent prohibitionists I his is undoubtedlyi due to the al leged carelessness of the present coun-J. en m suppressing the fiquor sellers.
