General Lawtun has reached the apotheosis of his fame: his head is to he put on a postage stamp. Why not bein by drawing the immigration laws a little tighter? Too many budding anarchists are getting in nowadays. A European scientist says that babies are great conveyers of germs. The first thing we know, the doctors will be telling us to boil our babies. A German has invented a substance which, sprinkled on mud. will transform trans-form it into a sticky substance. Honestly, he has; this Is no merry Jest. People who wish to vote at the coming City election should bear in mind that there are but two days on which to register October 15th and 29th. There are now three lost expeditions expedi-tions at the North Pole or thereabouts, there-abouts, and another has just started to rescue them. Before long, still another will be fitted up to rescue the four. This Is No, 1 of Volume 12, of The Independent, which means that this great family journal has been running eleven ypars. It herewith starts cheerfully off for eleven more years. Are you with us? Anarchy Is undoubtedly extending all over the world, and, in this country, at. least, efforts to stamp it out have not been proportional with its extension. It is to be hoped that the recent terrible act will act as a stimulus to the exclusion of these wild beasts. James caffrey, NOTARY PUBLIC SPRINGVILLE, UTAH. The band contest which the leader .fhfl ynrrflhfp hand was Bjpjirejtl so anxious to see occur, has evidently faded from bis mind entirely. Mayhap a merry laugh from the Payson boys would stir him to acti' n. The Paysonites sure have ample cause for nice broad grins. ; : Dr. N. II. The Meat Kept at a J i Iff i M 4 ii Is Always the Freshest, Sweetest, Best urn The editor hereof acknowledges with thanks the receipt of a complimentary com-plimentary season ticket to the State Fair at Salt Lake. Secretary Sears knows our failing. It breaks our heart to have to miss anything that is free, but we fear the Fair will have to worry along without us some old way. There Is a proposition before the county commissioners looking toward the establishment of a highway to the lake. At this writing we have no information as to what it is, but the move is a good one. Mr. Hill has the matter in charge. It Is something some-thing which should have been attended to long ago. From present indications we would say that there will probably be the two straight party tickets In the field at the approaching City election. It is our guess that the extreme prohibition element will endeavor to control ono or Loth parties. The Progressive Citizens appear to be out of the fight this year. THE VRESIDEST. President McKinley has passed away, and President Roosevelt has assumed the reins of government. Eight agonizing days in the National life sufficed for the change. It seems strange that the assassination of a president is needed to bring out the intense loe and veneration of the American nation f.irlts chief magistrate. Men who for years have abused Mr. McKinle-y's policies and in some instances have not hesitated to assail his personal integrity, find themselves voiceless with sorrow at his untimely end The causeless, senseless act of a fool has demonstrated that no crowned head In the world so fully possessed the trust and love of a great people. President McKinley was, without doubt, the highest type developed of the true American gentleman, and as a model for national citizenship was the equal of the great Washington. President Roosevelt is a man of a different type, and to a certain extent untried. -While he has proven an able man in the performance of those public duties assigned him by the people, it remains to be seen whether he can rise to the high standard of his predecessor. Still, few have any fears for the lesult. The Salt Lake City Couucil appears to be In earnest about bringing the winter flow of the Weber river waters into Utah lake. Their City engineer says the estimated expense is $40,000, and states that the level of the lake would be raised ten inches. This ought to interest land owuers here whoso holdings border on the lake, A Fine Line of Fresh and Cured Meats, Lard, Pickles, Canned Guods, Vegetables. Flsb and Game in Season OUR PRICES ARE REASONABLE If You want to dispose of all your Veals, Chickens arid Hides for cash, call on Austin Roylance, SprlDgYillc, Utah. , High treason was construed to mean nearly anythlug a century or so ago, and therefore' our forefathers, in making the Constitution, defined exactly in what it should consist, viz., "in levying war against the Uuited States or in lending aid and comtort to lis enemies." That Is why Czolgoi canuot be reached by It. THE ASSASS1X. Czolgosr,, the assassin, appears to be a man of the most ordinary type. Apparently he was not remarkable for any criminal bent of mind; neither does he seem to have had the stamina necessary to raise himself from the unpleasant circle of existence exist-ence In which nature placid him. He was utterly insignificant, except in that he was the most acute manifestation of an unhealthy element in the national life a miasmic poison, a social cancer, from which the body politic should be completely rid by the most drastic remedies. Any man or set of men who are so h; re-brained and utterly foolish as to exereisa extreme violDce in a ca e such as the one under consideration, where the assassination of an hundred men could scarcely turn the course of events, should be confined in places where they would be harmless. harm-less. Certain death as a punishment for their actions seems to have no terrors for them. The death of Czolgosz will not deter another mentally unbalanced individual fronj a like crime. Endless captivity until ttrft--Hie-Jm -iU9y" ?(ToTert-L would seem to be the only remedy, since the death penalty cannot be invoked until the crime is committed, and banishment would not surely keep them at a distance. IT WAHX'T MR. BKOWX. A county superintendent recently asked every teacher at the county institute who took their local paper to bold up their hands and out of about 100 present, only six responded, at which he expressed great surprise and said: "You don't spend one dollar a year with these papers, yet you expect them to print notices of institutes, insert long programs and full rep.irts of what you do and say on these occasions and thus expect them to advertise you and your abilities in your chosen profession, therefore assisting you to climb the ladder to higher positions and better salaries without a cent's postage In return." He closed by saying: "Your position in this matter would lead me, were 1 editor of these papers to properly throw Into the waste basket any communication sent in by any society, the members of which were too proud or stingy to take a paper, or if I inserted it, to demand full advertising rates for every line publ Ishcd. Exchange . The Independent rises to remark re-mark that the superintendent referred re-ferred to wasn't J. L. Brown, of this county. Utah County's superintendent superintend-ent of schools was blocked out of entirely different material and after a model long since fallen into disuse Id progressive communities. A number of practical fruit-growers on Pruvo bench are at work on plans for a co-operative fruit and vegetable catmery, which they propose to capitalize at 123,000. The stock is to be subscribed by producers as much as possible. Farmers and gardeners in the north end of the couuty are taking to It kindly, and a committee will soon be hero to Interest our people. It looks like a proposition which. Springville and Maplcton people could afford to itivestlgite and seriously consider. Wo notice with regret that the Munti Messenger, The Spkinqville Independent, the Ephruim Enterprise Enter-prise and several other state papers are not keeping up to their old standards. It never pays to let the paper run down, boys. Keep up your grit. liich field Reaper. That's all right. Teople occa Ion-ally Ion-ally set a pace which is faster than circumstances will warrant. The editor hereof! has had his lesson, and in endeavoring to profit by it tries to give the people of this community only what they are willing to pay for. When the people of Springville get ready for a ' blanket sheet" newspaper news-paper they will say so and will get It. In the meantime the pace set will oe one which all hands can travel with comfort. 3EST FOR THE BOWELS If Ton tmven't a regular, healthy morement of th fewt very day, you're til or will be.
