The surprising discovery that Nebraska statutes furnish no 'aw tinder which the kidnaper-can kidnaper-can be in -i-hed has called attention at-tention to the fact that similar lack is found in the laws of many states. It should be remedied rem-edied at once. The census figures as tabulated tabu-lated to date declare that there are about 3,000 centenarians in the United States. Some one has studied over this and announces an-nounces that this number shows that a man's chance of going to congress is about the same as his hope of living a century. It is announced that there are only two English dukes of proper age who are still unwed. The objection to the army bill is not that it supplies too large an army for the present needsof the government. Indeed, it is a question whether it supplies one that is large enough. The real objection is that it makes the increase or dt crease dependent on the will of the president instead in-stead of on the condition of the country as regards war aud peace. Any general law that would cut Southern representation on account of negro votes would cut Northern representation even more on account of non-naturalized non-naturalized foreigners, to say nothing in regard to criminals, insane and perhaps even women ami minors. A delivery wagon of one of the big bread baking factories of York vi He stopped in front of an uptown livery and boarding stable. the other morning, morn-ing, and two men at once unloaded barrels of bread and carried them into the stable, saya the New York Journal. Jour-nal. The bread looked good, and was good. There were all sorts and sizes of loaves in the barrels "homemade," "rye," "Vienna," "potato," "graham" and "cottage." The curiosity of a man who saw the bread being delivered to the stable wras aroused, and he ventured to ask the proprietor of the stable what it meant. "There's nothing remarkable about it," said the proprietor, with a laugh. "I simply buy it for horse feed. We grind the bread up and mix it with other feed, and it makes first-class food for horses. It is stale bread and costs us 40 cents a barrel, and there are 50 or 60 loaves to the barrel; so tou see it comes pretty cheap. Some of the bread is only .1 day old, and is good enough for any man to eat; but the bread factories cannot sell it. What Tou see here are returned loaves from the groceries. I'll bet there is many a soldier who would like to have had as pood bread in the war." Ortr the Falla. A Wisconsin paper reports an Indian's remarkable escape from death. lie was one of a driving crew that broke a big jam above Sturgeon Falls. He attempted attempt-ed to cross the river on a log, and to the horror of the spectators, was carried car-ried over the falls. The falls are 40 feet high, and consist of two pitches and the rapids. Of course the man was given up for dead, and the driving crew thought it useless to search the river for his body, as the logs were pilingover the falls at a rapid rate. The next morning, however, the Indian walked into camp for breakfast. He had been swept down the rivex and up against the bank, where he managed to crawl out. Finding only a few scratches and bruises, but being, as he remarked, "rather tired," he lay down and slept until daylight, and was none the worse for his adventure. Vaat Wealth of Htndooatan. In India there is more weahh than in any other country in the world. Gold, fabrics, jewelsand spices forages these have been produced and found in this land. One of the Indian princes owns jewels valued at $15,000,000. ' SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY. The vegetable ivory of Ecuador is the .nut of a native palm. The exports amount to 11,500 tons per annum, of which two-thirds go to Germany and one-sixth to the United States. The German firm of Krupp are said to be making trial of some light five-centimeter field pieces which are constructed con-structed of compressed paper. The good service of paper in car wheels suggested sug-gested the experiment. A Chicago workingmau has discovered discov-ered a process by which plate glass can be made from slag, the waste material in iron and steel manufacture, and the federal steel trust proposes to build a plant to turn out the new product. A glass factory has been started at St. Helens, England, in which the whole system of blowing- is replaced by an automatic arrangement of molds and blowpipes worked by compressed air. The output has been much increased. Connecticut Is noted for her queer laws. Here's the freshest bunch of them, from the New York World. They went into effect on the 1st of August: If a mortgagee pays insurance, taxes and assessments to protect property under un-der mortgage to him, such money shall become a part of the mortgage debt. Blind persons may be exempt from taxation to the amount of $3,000. The governor must proclaim arbor and bird days. Parents are responsible for their truant children. The United States flag must not be disfigured with inscriptions. You will be fined for digging more than one peck of clams on the Fairfield beach. Rabbits are protected in the close season. sea-son. Trout hatched from the egg by growers grow-ers may be sold between February 1 and October 1. You must kill wild ducks, geese and brant with a gun that must be raised at arm's length and discharged from the shoulder. All children in the schools must have their eyes tested. Dealers in second-hand bicycles must keep records. Lodging house keepers must keep their books in English. Bread must not be baked in a dark cellar. You must not kill more than 75 rail in one day. Diilam negotiation Concluded Between Be-tween New York and St. Paul Involving- f00,04H. Tn closing a business deal between New York and St. Paul two men carried on a telephone conversation foronehourtheotherday. The distance from New York to St- Paul is 1-.322 miles by rail, and a letter would be nearly two days getting there. Telegraphic Tele-graphic correspondence covering the same transactions) would have consumed' con-sumed' nearly a whole day, the telephone tele-phone people say, and the delay would have killed the deal. It cost $120, or $2 a minute, to- carry on the long distance dis-tance dialogue. The amount involved was $600,000. A St. Paul agent was ordering goods to that amount from a firm in lower Broadway. The induction on the wire made It impossible for either party to the deal to understand the other, but one girl in New York and another in St. Paul were able to understand because be-cause they were experienced operators. It is said that -we have suzerainty suzer-ainty over the South African republic. Sir Alfred Milner said there is nothing in this controversy as to whether we have suzerainty or not nothing material. ma-terial. My own view of suzerainty is that it is a word which nobody of course can define, but it lias got a flavor of sovereignty in it. and yet it is not sovereignty; and that the Boers hate t lie word because it has got that flavor in it. and the war party in the Cape and in oilier places like the word because they hope to impart into it something or another which may enable them under un-der a mask of sovereignty to do things which I think they had better not do." Solidified Wood Ileing; Prepared for the Paria Exposition In South Dakota, The polishing- works of this city are ! now engaged on the stupendous job of i getting out $1,000,000 worth of polished j chalcedony, or petrified wood, to be taken to the Paris exposition, says the Sioux Falls (S. D.) Journal. This petri- j lied wood is hauled from its native ' heath in Arizona, a distance of 05 miles, to a railroad and then shipped to this city to be cut and polished, this being the only place in the world having facilities fa-cilities for treating the petrifaction, which is seven-tenths as hard as diamond. dia-mond. It is shipped here in great logs and stumps weighing many tons each, just as they have lain for many ages during the process required by nature to turn the wood into beautiful and variegated colors of stone. The process of sawing the stone up in shape for polishing is most tedious, the huge machinery ma-chinery used for the purpose being able to saw only from an inch to three inches a day into it. After being cut and polished pol-ished the stone is worked up into every conceivable shape, from cuff buttons to tops for center tables and great columns which cost a great fortune.
