The annual report of the supervising inspector general of steamboats, which hr.s ju.-t beer; made public iii the form of an abstract, contains a highly iuler-estinar iuler-estinar exhibit of the numbers of lives lost at sea from American vessels during; dur-ing; the last calendar year, torethir with other impoi'tnn t correlated infor- oation. !t appears from this document thai the total number of person; crowned, or who came to their death in other v-.ays. was 401, which is a consid-e consid-e ibic increase over the previous year, when the aggregate of fatalities was 123 less. This increase was due to the foundering of the steamer Portland oil" th;- Massachusetts coast during the great gale on the night of November 27, 1808. Every one of the 127 persons on board perished. Of the total of 404 8G fatalities were chargeable to accidental drowning, 213 persons went down with wrecks, 13 succumbed to fires, 31 were killed in colli---inns. 21 were the victims of cx- i plosions or of accidental escape of ! steam, and iu 37 cases miscellaneous ' Ti:e chapter en destruction of vessel ' property shows thai -13 vesst- Is met with ! act 'dent.-, seven had fires. 13 w ere in I ?o!ii.-ir.r, eight ?:-:pe rtenced a breaking j of steam pipe?, two had explosions and i IS encountered snass and wrecks or developed leaks. The destruction of Ihe Portland was not due to laxness on the part of inspectors, but to the recklessness reck-lessness of her captain, who insisted on 'putting out to sea in the teeth of a fierce storm. Except for this disaster, the loss of life would have been comparatively small. Only two vessels were damaged by explosions an excellent record considering con-sidering the extent of steam water traffic. Baltimore Herald. Over the Falls. A Wisconsin paper reports an Indian's remarkable escape from death. He was one of a driving crew that broke a big jam above Sturgeon Falls. He attempted attempt-ed to cross the river on a log, and to the horror of '.he spectators, was carried car-ried over the falls. The falls are 40 feet high, and consist of two pitches anc' tne rapids. Of course the man was given up for dead, and the driving crew thoupht it usele?s to search the river for his body, as the logs were piling over the falls at a rapid rate. The next morning, however, the Indian walked into camp for breakfast. He had been swept down the river and up against the bank, where he managed to crawl out. Finding only a few scratches and bruises, but being, as he remarked, "rather tired," he laj- down and slept until daylight, and was none the worse for bis ailventure. , Vat Wealth of Illntloontaii.
