The Independent gang and a party of a dozen friends went to Maple canyon, Sunday, and took possession of Perry's grove for the day. Mr. Terry has an ideal place for a picnic, there being plenty of shade, cold water and scenery. It is easily accessible, and the roads to. it over the Mapleton bench are good. Ttie Independent's thanks are hereby tendered the genial proprietor of Oak Springs Grove. Last Sunday during John Martin's absence at a picnic a number of the young hoodlums with which this city is infested had a gay time at his place. They robbed John's poultry yard, threw rocks at his shop and frightened his lailor nearly into tits. The wound up their festivities by stealing a bag of bicycle tools. John is watching for a certain gang of kids, and the little wretch who gets caught will soon be supping sorrow with the sjMon of grief. The country newspaper man who stands up for the right has to look to the hereafter for most of his reward In one or two respects, however, he comes out ahead in this world of sorrow. In the first place he has the commendation of his own conscience if he has any. In the second place, he learns that nearly all the people who are so ready to pat him on the back and encourage him in his work will promptly desert him when there are signs of trouble. "Twas ever thus and always will be. "Blessed is he that expecteth nothing, for verily he shall not be disappointed." ISushncll Record. Do You Know Consumption is preventable? For some time past it has been quietly rumored that a gigantic deal involving the control of the Star Cons, was on, and it now develops that an offer has been made for the entire issue of the stock qt $1 per share. The parties negotiating are willing to take 400,000 shares if the entire issue cannot be had. It Is understood that of the amount wanted 391,000 shares have already been pledged, so it is reasonably certain cer-tain that this property will pass into the control of other hands in a short time. It is believed amongst local mining men that the deal, if con- snmated, wi!) carry with it also the Liuss Tweed on the north and the Dragon Iron mine on the south. Iff. Story of a Slave. . It will pay anyone who is not acquainted with sericulture to go over to the Wightman hotel and see the silk worms that are at present engaged in their peculiar way of making silk. There are 60,000 of them loading up on mulberry leaves, the only thing they will eat, some of which have already reached tbe limit of their capacity and have commenced spinning and rolling themselves up into cocoons. Within a week they will all likely be robed in silk. Two weeks later they will emerge from their silky covering and come out in the form of butteifles. This little army of silk nmkprs is under the charge of Miss Pearl Daley, whose principal duty is to sec that they get their necessary rations of mulberry leaves. Uncle Georg-e Matson Visits the White House and Tells About the Mormons. Washington, D. C, July 16.-- ( Herald Special) George B. Matson of Springville, a Utah pioneer, visited the White House with his 19-year-old daughter this afternoon. He is possessor of one of the handsome gold medals presented at the Pioneer Jubilee. The medal commemorates the fact that Matson and 143 others were the only living members of that first pioneer party that crossed the plains in the "prairie schooner." Mr, Matson talked interestingly tin the patriotism of the Mormon people, as a whole, and 6aid that the large amount of gossip circulated throughout through-out tbe east was generally lacking in fact. He said he wanted particularly to deny the recent story that the president of the Mormon church had been arrested for having a second wife. ' - ' . "The man is ADgus M. Cannon," said Mr. Matson, "but he is not the president of the Mormon church." Mr, Matson says he is personally acquainted with Representative-elect Roberts, and asserts emphatically that if he is' given a seat in congress he will be second to no man there in the matter of brains and brilliancy. "Mr. Roberts is a very unostentatious unostenta-tious man," continued Mr, Matson. "He does not say much about the fuss that U being raised about bis election in the east, but he certainly has no other intention than to demand his seat iu congress." Mr. Matson says that he built the fifth bouse that was erected in Salt Lake City. In answer to a question as to how many wives, he remarked that he nevea bad but one. "One wife and one family was all I thought I needed," he solemnly remarked. re-marked. Mr. Matson's eastern trip is simply one of sight-seeing -and pleasure, and he remarked that the railroads had graciously extended him unasked passes. He leaves Washington tomorrow to-morrow for the east. Young Mothers. Croup is the terror of thousands of young mothers because its outbreak is so agonizing and frequently, fatal.
