"A Citizen" Replies to Mr- Jotm- . son's Communication. Editor Ixdepkxdext Thanking you kindly, for space in your paper, I wili attempt to review the art icle by D. C. Johnson in your issue of Oct. 19, giving his reasons why the City pasture should be sold. The gentleman sets out with the statement that the pasture was taken , up in the '50s by some gentlemen who j found that for farming purposes it was a failure, although h e says it was the scarcity of water, and then those gentlemen gave it up for the benefit of the citizens of Springville for a pasture; after a time it was decided by tlie High Council that it should be kept for a pasture. Then, he says, they selected some good and true men to enter it for the City. Now this is a question 1 do not care to discuss at this time, as most of the old settlets know the facts connected with the matter, and today it is an open question whether the City has a clear title to it or not. However, they have control of it and it is a source of revenue, arid last year, I understand, the City received $600 for the rent of it. Now, if the renters can pay $000 for the use of the pasture for one season could it not be made lo pay $060 more by the City engaging a good, reliable m;in by the tuonlh to take care of it through the pasturing season? It seems to me that could be done, and then tlie revenue would be $1,320, less the man's wages, and this could be made to pay the city somewhere rear a lluusand dollars a season, and if a sinking fund were made of it it would do more to pay off 1 lie indebtedness of the City or put up an electric light plant,. In five or six years the revenue from the pasture would put up a plant, and ttie revenue reve-nue to t he City from the lights that would he taken by the people would be another source of revenue besides linliting the main streets flee. Bv this means the City would own the pasture, the electric light plant and the revenue from both of them, notwithstanding not-withstanding the gent iem, in says !li. poor have had no special benefit.. Now in my opinion if ihaf pasture did not belong to the City, every poor person who owns a cow could not KlTor.l to keep one, and the result-would result-would be the poor would have to sdl out and butter would become a luxury that they could not afford to indulge in. I claim every citizen is interested in that pasture, either directly or indirectly. in-directly. That is, if that pasture should be sold parties owning private pastures would charge eight dollars where now jou get a cow pastured for three dollars. These illustrious gentlemen who want to sell the pasture tell us that -10 or 50 of our citiz 'iis can have IU acres each, nod by the revenue derived de-rived therefrom v.ou d n duce our taxes. Now.- if as some ciaiui there a re 25(1 acres of very fair land that would do to farm, ami if it should lie cut utj into 10 acre pieces, and suppose five of those illustrious citizens have live boys each who have no hind: why. the land sold would be a pei-suiial pei-suiial benefit to live of I hose illiisti i ous families; they pel haps would have the money with which to buy the hind. As you know the only issue is the selling of the pasture, these illustrious illustri-ous citizens ha ve made it impossible to go on party lines at this election bah!
