Rock Springs HOTEL TEMPLETON ELDER LOYM) IN MISSOl llJ. lie is Now Laboring in a Historic Locality. EDITOR 1 NDErENDKNT: As I lave been laboring in this historical his-torical land for the past three months 1 thought a short sketch of my work would he interesting to -otne of the readers of your paper, especially those who aie interested in the work of the Lord and the redemption of this promised land, from Atchison county, from wiie re 1 in connect ion Kay, to St. Jos Missouri, vvhei last wrote, I was sent, with Elder John W. ph, liuchanan county, we labored for three months with but little success, owing to religious bigotry: most id' the people being Catholics, a denomination denomina-tion quite ojiposed lo all other sects, even foi bidding its members lo investigate in-vestigate the doctrines taught by other churches. St. Joseph is a lie.iut il'u! city situated on the east batiks of the Missouri river, claiming a population of 7o, noo inhabitants, mostly of (Jcr-man (Jcr-man descent, and is the richest city in America according lo the number of inhabitants. Its past history also reveals some very interesting relics, and among the many is one that still lives in the minds of the people to this day. It was the last rendezvous of Jesse James, .the most daring outlaw out-law of the last century. In the southeastern south-eastern part of the city still stands the three roomed frame house where Jessie fell a martyr for crime at the hi. rids of Robert Ford. The building stood for years unoccupied, until its Visitors who came there for curiosity's sake nearly carried away the fence with which it was surrounded and took olf the gate, which is now in New York. Everything loose was carried away as relics of the Iguomin-ous Iguomin-ous death of this notorious character, perpetrated by a traitorous hand. Even the blood stained Moor was nearly near-ly picked to pieces by the curious visitors who came from far and near, anxious to gaze upon the scene wln-rj fell the hero of lawlessness, while living in peace, under a false name and while otlicers and detectives were using every effort to bring him to justice. Today the house stands in a repaired condition and occupied by a family who keep the fatal room in the same state as when the affair took place, making a charge of 25 cents admission. On the 25th of March 1 left St. Joseph to attend Conference at Jefferson Jeffer-son City where I met twenty-two elders from Zion who had been laboring labor-ing in surrounding fields of labor, and to our surprise we were permitted to hold our Conference in the Capitol building in the Capital city of the state of Missouri, which was built by Gov. Wilburn Hoggs who issued the extermination orders which caused the expulsion of the Saints from the state. This shows tlie great change which has taken place in sixty years, asweweic permitted to preach the same doctrine in this spacious building build-ing that caused the mobbing, persecution persecu-tion and expulsion of our people from the state of Missouri and Illinois. During our Conference an enjoyable time was had and much good was accomplished. There were some baptized and many left seeking for a testimony of the truth. From Jefferson City 1 was sent in company with President II. W. Dixon. Elders 11. F. Dutlin and Thomas II. Ingram to Jucksou county to begin a labor among the inhabitants of this promised land whose forefathers put into execution that iufa.nous edict which drove 1500 men, 'women and children from Missouri into Hancock county, Illinois; but the scene has changed and the sun has gone down over such inhuman treatment, and, instead thereof, have access to the honies of the people, and in many instances in-stances to their school In. uses and churches to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Instead of having to travel nights and hide at day time for fear of mobs, as our bretheru had to do in years gone by, we are able to travel and preach the Gospel without purse cr scrip as in days of old. I landed in Jackson county with ten cents and as yet I have had no need of that much for either food or shelter, the people (in this line) supplying sup-plying my -wants. Since our arrival here thirteen have been baptized and a branch of the church organized at Independence, Ithe first branch in this place since is;) with twenty-one members. There seems to be a great change taking place among the people, the honest are seeking more dilligent-ly dilligent-ly for the truth while they wlio seek i to do wrong are siukiBg deeper into ! the bonds of iniquity. While there ; are many here who arc earnestly seeking seek-ing to know the truth there are also ! many false teachers rising up. teach- ing incorrect principles and delusive , doctrines to draw disciples alter them. Mr. Dailinj lias been here at Independence for j three years past, claiming to lie some j great one called to redeem Zion. but j he has met with a total failure. Also Mr. Dennis from Salt Lake City who claims to be sent of God to inaugurate the Order of Enoch and build t lit-1 temple. He makes the prediction that the temple will be finished in two and a half years, but of course, J his prophesy will fail like all other! false suppositions. We have also three women I who wish to make their! sex conspicuous by introducing something some-thing out or the ordinary) putting in a claim as being divinely called to do some great work but have not made any headway as yet, except to take possession of a man's house, telling him the Lord gave them permission to take it, but he not being willing to be made the first victim of their purported pur-ported revelation lias appealed to the laws of the land for justice. And so the world moves on, and false prophets pro-phets and false teachers arise as Jesus has said they would do before his com n. It seems that where the Lord's work is most prosperous, there the Devil puts his greatest forces. In my travels in this country 1 have had the privilege of visiting some of the old .stamping grounds of the Saints, especially along the Big ll'ue where the Coleville branch settled in is:il. It was here in Kaw Township that Joseph, assisted by eleven others, laid the tirst log ii Zion. It was also there, just across the Itlue river, where the third Conference of the church was held in a big bowery erected for the occasion. It was in this settlement of the Saints that Philo Dibble lived, and on Sunday, November 3rd, 18X1, in a conflict with the mob fell severely wounded while in defense of the Saints. There are many ' old remains of their houses still in existence. Their old rock chimneys have tumbled down and the farmers have left them pilled up on their farms in memory of t he Mormons. There are many fanner fann-er here who have no warranty deed to their lands, which makes it quite difficult when they wish lo sell. As the Saints were driven at the point of the bayonet from their homes they kept their deeds, and consequently all the holders have is a tax title. In the main, Jackson county is a beautiful country composed of low rolling hills, covered this time of the year with good crops and shady groves well supplied sup-plied with running brooks. The weather is getting hot, registering as high as 98 degrees. There is a good prospect of plenty' if the rainmaker comes to their aid. With best wishes to all, 1 remain respectfully yours for the right, Tn os. Loyno, Independence, Mo., June 2), 18!7. COXTKACT FOR HAULING.
