"Casey's 400'; company held the boards at the City hall four night-s la-t week closing their engagement Friday evening. Owing to the bad weather the company did not do a very large business. The company was a fairly good one and gave fair satisfaction. A. W. Fremont's ''7"7' company held the boards at the Opera house, Monday night. The company was greeted by a very poor house. This was to be regreted, as the play was a goood one and the company was one of I he strongest that has played in this city during the season. Infant mortality is something frightful. It started up Thursday noon, but had run only a short time when a shaft in the cutting machine broke and the factory was forced to -stop. The break was not very serious and was repaired so that Ihe operations were resumed Saturday morning Deal Bros. & Mendenhall have secured a contract from the Rio Grande Western for the building of a half mile of road at Thistle, which will keep their outfits busy for six months at least. The work is that of changing the traek and consists of a heavy rock cut which contains 11,000 cubic yards of rock and a fill of about 12,000 yards. Their outfits leave today for the work. A very pleasant surprise parly was given Miss Gertrude Harrison, Tuesday Tues-day night, by a number of her friends. A tine musical program was rendered by some of Springville's best local talent. In the write-up of a funeral an exchange says the deceased "lay quietly in his casket." That was an eminently decorous thing to do. Alexander, the phrenologist, has given some very instructive and useful lectures this wetk upon different subjects, pertaining pertain-ing to the welfare of tvery human being, and some that are not l.uaian. His lectures hav3 been interspersed with humor and wit, and well worth the price of admission which was .free to all who did not waut to donate when he passed the liat. After each lecture four citizens - from the audience were called up for examination, examina-tion, and the Professor come wfthrn a gunshot of telling them their faults and .good qualities. Mr. Fnlmer was a Member of the First Xcvaila Volunteer Cavalry, and Saw Active Service in the Philippines. Springville was astir, Tuesday, with patriotism, and her citizens did themselves them-selves proud in welcoming home tine of her young men who had enlisted in the volunteer armv and saw.serviee in the Philippines. The young man iu whose honor ,the demonstration was given, was Don Fulmer, sou of Mr. and Mrs. D. (J. Fulmer. The young man, w ho has been in Nevada for several years, enlisted from that state and was mustered into the First volunteer cavalry company. His company was assigned to service in the Philippines, and was one of the last volunteer organizations organiza-tions to be mustered out of the service. He arrived horue on the afternoon train at 3:25. and was met at the depot by several hundred people. The schools were all dismissed and the pupils went to the depot in a bony. The G. A- R. men and the Indian war veterans were present, as were all the Utah vo'unleers of Springville who were in town. A procession was formed at the depot, and heauei! by the Maccabee band, marched to the City square. There Mr. Fulmer made a short addiess, after which the parade disbanded and the young soldier was turned over to his parents and relatives, who took him in triumph to his home. His parents had arranged for a social gathering and supper, at which a huge number of his relatives and friends were invited. Considering the time they had at their disposal, in working up the demonstration it was very tine and reflects credit on the chizens and especially on Thomas Dailin and ' others who were the -rime movers in the affair.
