The Fourth of July excursion business busi-ness of the Rio Grande Western was heavier from this station this week than for many years. Sundry was a lively day in the Rio Grande yards here. Half the engines n the line showed up at one time and another that day. The Mothers meeting un ler the W. C. T. U will be held tin next Thursday Thurs-day afternoon. Quite a delegation of Springville people went to Provo, Thursday, to attend the funeral of Win. Strong, The deceased officer stood hih in the esteem and confidence of the people of Utah county. Jared Smith pot a load of liquid patriotism aboard on the Fourth, and created a disturbance on the Hank corner. On Wednesday he was brought before Justice Hoyer and asscs.'ij J2.50 for his celebration. The very Rev. Dean Halsey of St. Mark's Cat hcdral Salt Lake City, or l he Rev. Ellis, Rishop of St. Paul's, will hold Episcopal service with sermon ser-mon at the Caffrey hall, Sprjngville, on Sunday, July Uth, at 8 o'clock p. m. Everyone cordially invited. Ieputy ' Marshal Ted Wood was over from Spanish Fork this morning looking fur six hoboes who broke into the Rio Grande Western depot at that place last night. A bundle of clothimr and a drummer's sample c.ise f gloves were taken. J. M. Clark, the bicycle repairer is now able L'i do all kinds of frame work, such as brazing and enameling. Lieutenant Pearson, the Utah boy a it h Dewey ut the battle of Manila, thinks it would be a good plan to have a war ship on Great Salt Lake. A warship on Salt Lake ought to at least entitle Utah Lake to a torpedo boat, or protected cruiser. I'jysou Globe-llcader. Sidney Garland, the Rio Grande Western brakeman who had his hand crushed while coupling cars on the Tintic branch a few days ago, has suffered the amputation of the member at St. Mark's hospital since. An effort was made to save it, but this was found impossible. Of the grayling eggs State Fish and Gune Warden Sharp brought from Montana sorue few weeks ago, three plantings have been made in . Utah lake. One consignment of 40,000 was placed in a creek ner Provo, another or 6,000 were put in East Canyon creek, and another lot or 6,000 were put in at Brighton. It is thought that within the next few days the State fish hatchery will be decided upon. Dcscret Aries, Some move should be made toward an appropriate welcome home for the Springville volunteers. They deserve it. and nothing Springville could do for them would be to good. Silver or gold medals should be gotten, and a grand ball and banquet arranged. Nothing cheap or shoddy should be attempted in this connection. Other towns are doing the proper thing, and Springville should be able to show them how it is done. A month is none too much time. The fate of Marshal Strong of Frovo should be a warning to all towns in Utah that the only way to deal with the tramp question is to deal with it vigorously and with a firm hand. Temporizing will encourage license and lead to tragedy. There are a few men who arc compelled to ask assistance assist-ance who are really worthy of charity, but tbegreat percentage are a trifling lizyset, and communities should treat them in a manner that will riot encourage en-courage their . preseuce. Jtidijidd Ji'eapcr. A man wants to know what a dollar isanybovv. Tbat, is easily answered. A dollar is what some men pay for their home paper. It is something that most newspaper men enjoy iore in anticipation than in reality. It is what the wife needs and seldom has. It is the price of a day's labor for some men and a night's labor for others. It is tbe power that makes ami unmakes oiea. It is the hardest thiug to get. and the easiest thing to get rid of known to mankind. It is mighty and scarce. No man ever had more than he wanted and no man ever will. Exchanged Ike Whittaker was down to Lake Shore, last week, and brought home the most dreadful , fish story of the season. Either there are wonderful sights down at Lake. Shore, or the warm weather was too m ich for Ike . He tells of a slough which dried up, and wagon loads and wagon loads of fish and things perished and all on the space of an acre or two of ground. The air down there is so rich from the stench of decaying fish, that farmers are carving it in great chunks and putting it on their lands as a fertilizer. Oh. its just awful! (That the residence of the latter on Moud: y last in honor of the right Rev. Bishop Leonard, which was largely attended by Springville and Provo members of his congregation; as well as numerous others interested. The contestants will be Misses Ruby Hall, Pearl Daley, Fannie Rowland, llena Finley and Myrtle IlalJ. Music will be furnished by some of our best local talent. An entertaining and instructive evening is assured to all who come. For the past week a large pond of water, the full width of the stieet, has existed just east of the Itio Grande depot. It doesn't especially improve the scenery in that locality, but the frogs and things which live in that pond provide nightly concerts which are said to be fine. Arrangements Arrange-ments should be made to have a steady stream of water turned in there, else the pond will dry up in a few weeks. Last Saturday night a party of Danish emigrants, bound for the Sanpete and Sevier country, stopped wer until the next day. They were in charge of Chris Jensen, a Mormon missionary from Sanpete. They had a few troubles of their iiwn, their baggage having gone astray, and being a little short, or funds. Marshal Gemmell tendered them the hospitality hospi-tality of his rooms at the City hall, which they accepted. Yesterday's Ennuircr says: "Sheriff Storrs started this afternoon for Montpelier, Idaho, where there is a negro being held, who is believed to be the one with whom Policeman St rong had trouble at the depot, the Sunday evening previous to the shoot ing, 'the negro .threatened the officer if be attempted to arrest, him. It was believed that the coon arrested at Lebi was the negro, but the olllcers have been convinced that he is not." It is funny, isn't? Farmers, when they wish to retire, move to town. Town people, wher. they wish to retire, re-tire, move to the country. A man has poor health and he moves to town to rest up and get well where he will not be bothered with hard work. The town man, when he has poor health, will go to the country with his tent, and wili pitch it under some shady tree where he may enjoy the Gountry air and rusticate in the enjoyment enjoy-ment of a perpetual picnic. Filmorc Prcyrcss. Frank, the 13-ycar-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wni. Roylance, Sr., met with quite a serious accident at C o'clock on the morning of the Fourth. He was trying to work off his great load of patriotism and give expressh n to his American sentiments through l he agency of a bomb composed of an old oyster can, gunpowder and mud. The fuse used to explode this ingenious ingen-ious petard was made of paper, and did not give Frank time to get out of the danger one. The explosion threw the can into his face, cutting a gash in his forehead which required seven stitches to close, and also cut a gash over his right eye and injuring that organ so badly as to endanger the sight.
