Show Thursday, September 6, 2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Photography Continued from page 1 The goal in Goss's work was to duplicate, as closely close-ly as possible, Anderson's locations, compositions, lens and negative specifications, speci-fications, and even the times and seasons. This method is called re-photography, and it allows exhibit goers to compare and examine paired images that yield a surprising amount of information about Utah's changing and unchanging unchang-ing ecology, agriculture, architecture, landscapes and more. Sometimes appearing deceivingly simple, the quest of repho-tography repho-tography can be very difficult dif-ficult and time consuming to carry out. The exhibit allows viewers view-ers to experience space and time in a surprising way, noting both the enduring en-during and the fleeting aspects as-pects of Utah landscapes. A reception will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in The Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium Audito-rium Gallery (first floor) . to observe these stunning images taken by two exceptional ex-ceptional Utah photographers. photogra-phers. As an architectural ar-chitectural historian and a historic preservationist, preservation-ist, Goss often conducted research in the George Edward Anderson Photo Collection. The Anderson Collection contains over 17,000 glass plate negatives, nega-tives, along with thousands thou-sands of photographic prints, taken across central cen-tral Utah (Sevier County to Salt Lake County and beyond) between the late 1880s and mid-1920s. Anderson of ten traveled from town to town as a circuit intenerate photographer, photog-rapher, frequently taking his clients' photos outside with spouses, children, extended family, beloved possessions, home, and farm buildings surrounding surround-ing them. Anderson's photos pho-tos are as historically important im-portant as they are beautifully beau-tifully composed. Dr. Goss received funding fund-ing for this project from The University of Utah Creative Research Grant and the 2007 Delmont Oswald Os-wald Research Fellowship from the Utah Humanities Humani-ties Council. She also ran a business in Springville for eight years. "I have the time to serve as Mapleton's mayor. Because Be-cause my family is raised and my husband's job as a BYU faculty member provides our income, I can spend the time necessary to serve the city as mayor," said Tolley. "I have the talent to serve as Mapleton's mayor. I have strong people skills -1 am warm, approachable and patient and am very organized and good at finding creative solutions to difficult problems. Most important, I am 'thick skinned.'" Tolley said she doesn't become positional or offended of-fended when confronted confront-ed or questioned about policy. Her only agenda is to serve the citizens of Mapleton and make sure the current city decisions will adequately prepare for the future. These actions were taken tak-en Tuesday evening at the regular city council meeting. meet-ing. The council did explain to the large group of citizens citi-zens in attendance that plans now before the cour cil include shortening the new city hallpolicecourt complex some and changing chang-ing the configuration of the proposed fire station which will leave even more park space and save a large tree. According to the council, more park space will exist when the project is complete com-plete than exists today. This does not include the park space which will surround sur-round the new library on the east side of the street. The council also assured that "measures will be taken tak-en to protect children from getting into the creek at that site." The council also said that increasing building costs are behind their reason to "move on" with the project proj-ect at this time. Also, the needs of the public safety departments and the city administration are still there and should to be addressed ad-dressed now that the decision deci-sion has been made. In other actions, the council approved a reimbursement reim-bursement agreement with the LDS Church for storm sewer improvements in the west fields on their new construction site at 1750 West across the street east of Wal-Mart. The LDS Church is planning plan-ning a complex to include a bishop's storehouse, family services facility, a Deseret Industries outlet and other off ices on that property. The council also voted to allow the electrical department depart-ment to enter into the "all in electric pool" with the Utah Association of Municipal Munic-ipal Power Systems, which will allow the department to save about $200,000 a year in power purchases. . The electric department says these savings will be possible because of its acquisition of "base load" power contracts for power from Intermountain Power Project units one and two. The department was also given the go ahead to continue con-tinue its position concerning concern-ing IPP3, a new coal fired unit which might be built next to IPP units one and two. This position is important impor-tant to guarantee Springville Spring-ville City Power's ability to purchase even more "base load" power from units one and two should it become available.
