The first labor and delivery experience does not happen like you .expect. The whole process takes too long and is way too painful. The second time you go through it (because (be-cause you somehow forgot about the first!) it is a little shorter, and although still painful, somehow you now know how to deal with it - epidural. With that said, let me share my review of an American classic selected by our Spring Oaks book club this month. ; "O Pioneers!" is an outstanding out-standing short novel written writ-ten by the Pulitzer Prize winning author Willa Cath-er. Cath-er. She is the Hemming-way Hemming-way of the prairie, without his chauvinism and a little less angst. She portrays the pioneer farming experience expe-rience in a simple, concise style. The journey of her reader is effortless and filled with awe and respect for the brave characters and their struggles with the land. Cather uses her own experiences growing up in late nineteen century Nebraska to make this sojourn so-journ beautiful and believable. believ-able. This lyrical prose illustrates illus-trates Cather's love of the prairie and her admiration for the people that pioneered pio-neered there. "When the road began to climb the first long swells of the Divide, Di-vide, Alexandra hummed an old Swedish hymn, . . .For the first time, perhaps, since that land emerged from the waters of geologic geo-logic ages, a human face was set toward it with love and yearning. It seemed beautiful to her, rich and strong and glorious. Her eyes drank in the breadth of it, until her tears blinded her. Then the Genius of the Divide, the great, free spirit spir-it which breathes across it, must have bent lower than it ever bent to human wiU before. The history of every ev-ery country begins in the heart of a man or a woman." wom-an." I love Cather's writing style - it is like the clear, sweet song of a lark. She requires few notes to create cre-ate a soaring melody. The protagonist, Alexandra Alex-andra Bergson, is a determined de-termined intelligent child as the book begins. After the death of her Swedish immigrant father she becomes be-comes the caretaker of the family farm as it hovers on the brink of ruin. Because of her hard work and ability abil-ity to accept new ideas and adapt them to their farm, the Bergson family prospers. pros-pers. As the story concludes we reflect on the lessons learned by Alexandra and her fellow pioneers: Sacrifice Sacri-fice and hard work combined com-bined with foresight and risk can bring prosperity; prosper-ity; virtue and trustworthiness trustwor-thiness can bring respect and friendship; and sadly, yielding to temptation can bring tragic consequences. Although writing a recommendation rec-ommendation for a book, like childbirth, will never be painless or easy, it is an experience that does have its rewards. I can teU you all about a book I really love. When you finish reading "O Pioneers!" Pio-neers!" you wiU also want to encourage others to read this American classic.
