Unitarian Come join the Utah Valley Val-ley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, along with UUs from four other Utah congregations, con-gregations, at Celebration Sunday, in SLC, March 11th at 11 a.m, at Libby Gardner Concert Hall, on Presidents Circle at the University of Utah. The speaker will be Rebecca Parker, President of the Starr King School for Gordon F. Holloway, Ph.D. The last of the series will address the various treatment treat-ment approaches available avail-able in Utah to assist the tinnitus sufferer in overcoming over-coming tinnitus. The first approach, Masking, was refined by Jack Vernon, Ph.D. after technology provided a means for developing de-veloping small noise generators gen-erators that fit at the ear and produced a hissing noise at sufficient levels to cover (mask) the internal-sound internal-sound of tinnitus. Diagnostic and treatment treat-ment techniques have been refined and tinnitus masking mask-ing remains a viable treatment treat-ment approach. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) was developed de-veloped in the 1970's as a means of treating emotional emotion-al stress. Peter H. Wilson and Jane L. Henry, both psychologists, refined the techniques to make them more applicable to the tinnitus tin-nitus sufferer. A simplified explanation explana-tion is that CBT involves a detailed examination of the content of thoughts that a person experiences when aware or bothered by the tinnitus. The therapist thera-pist helps the patient to identify the thoughts that commonly occur, challenges chal-lenges the validity of these thoughts and teaches Ministry in Berkeley, California. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) was developed devel-oped by Pawel Jastreboff , Ph.D. in 1994. His approach focuses on the limbic and autonomic nervous system, sys-tem, with the use of noise generators to aid in habituation habitu-ation to tinnitus. Counseling Counsel-ing is geared to the demys- tif ication of tinnitus. Tinnitus Management Counseling and Sound Therapy, although less structured that the above discussed treatments, is nevertheless, a viable treatment treat-ment approach also. WEST ANiMAt HOSPITAL Young children with pets have fewer days off sick from school, according to academics in Coventry, Cov-entry, England. University of Warwick researchers research-ers found four and five year olds whose families kept animals had attendance levels 18 higher than their peers without pets. Health psychologist Dr. June McNicholas said dogs, cats, fish, birds and rodents were among the creatures owned by the children surveyed. She said the theory was that pets helped boost children's chil-dren's health was not improved by any particular type of pet. "It is more to do with just owning a pet and taking care of it, and having it live in the same house as you." Researchers monitored 265 children aged 5 to 11 years from three schools. Dr. McNicholas said previous pre-vious research had shown children whose families kept pets were less likely to have asthma or allergies. aller-gies. "The underlying theory is that the immune system develops in relation to what it is exposed to," she said. Sons of Pioneers to meet March 15 r" i tit -Mw 7 2 ' W i iHflrt"!
