Show Thursday, October 12, 2006 Large crowd enjoys Community &Family Night SPRINGVILLE HERALD i The Springville Museum of Art monthly Community Communi-ty and Family Night drew crowds of over 300 children chil-dren and adults alike for entertainment, education and quality family time. Guests were treated to a presentation from local glass artist Ray Grover, a puppet show from Max Out Puppetry, and a constructive con-structive art project for their children. "Community Night is a great way to incorporate art into a child's life," said Kathy Hinckley, a Marriage Mar-riage & Family Human Development major from BYU who volunteered at the event. "Art is an integral inte-gral part of children's education edu-cation and this program teaches them in a way that is both entertaining and inspiring. in-spiring. It's something that a whole family can enjoy together." ' The museum sponsors spon-sors the event on the first Monday of every month excluding holidays, completely com-pletely free of charge. The local artist gave a presentation presen-tation discussing some of his latest pieces and how he was inspired to work in glass sculpture. "I used to build display cases and then one day I just started playing with the glass," Grover said. "I started building some cra zy stuff and now here I am 14 years later." He hoped to inspire the children and teach them that if they can think it -they can make it. "I want the kids to see that they can do anything they set there minds to. I wanted to 'show them that something as beautiful as art can be a release for them from the stress of life today. You can get away and do something some-thing that is constructive and stress relieving. They can find themselves in their art." When a small boy asked Grover how he constructed construct-ed his glass sculptures, Grover replied, "One piece at a time," a personal motto mot-to he wanted to pass on to the children. "Everyone has hard days and is striving to achieve their dreams and thier goals," Grover said, "you have to take things one piece at a time, just like my sculptures. Following Grover's presentation, pre-sentation, families were treated to a performance from the Max Out Puppetry Puppet-ry group. . "It was a lot of fun," said Jonathan Wilson, a performer in the group, "When the kids interact with the puppets, we know that we've successfully created the illusion that SHS Marching Band Spaghetti Dinner Monday The annual Springville High School Marching Band Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hobble Creek Elementary Elementa-ry School in Mapleton. "We tend to judge the success of our shows by the amount of screaming," said Caitlin Shirts, another talent in the group. "They screamed a lot tonight." Families were then invited invit-ed to participate in an art project in the Youth Gallery, Gal-lery, where the children could let their creativity and imaginations run wild, using cardboard instead of glass, to create sculptures of their own "We were really excited about it," said Rebecca de Schweinitz, a mother of two who just moved into the community a few months ago. "We absolutely absolute-ly love the museum and will definitely be coming back next month." Firefighter Stephan Larsen from Salt Lake City came and visited the classes and taught them fire safety. They got to practice rolling on the ground with him and timed him as he put on his firefighting gear. The children's favorite part was when he would rescue them from a "Burning Building" and carry them to safety using the firefighter perfected hold. Thank you Firefighter Larsen for taking the time to teach us to be safe.
