They range from matters concerning special improvement im-provement districts and streets and roads, to minor repairs of city buildings and purchases of equipment. Denny Murray, representing Calder and Wilson Engineering Company presented a proposal of 10 percent of the bid price on the proposed Improvement District project on East Maple, West Maple, and Center Streets. The council withheld a decision on this matter until consultation with the county commissioners pertaining the establishing of t-ast tenter street as a state road. Frank Bonnell and Dave Ackley of Engineering Associates discussed the possibilities of obtaining a sewer grant. They stated that the initial application should be submitted as soon as possible. They indicated the application could be completed for a fee of an additional seven hundred to one thousand dollars. Councilman Coun-cilman Korth made a motion, seconded by Councilman Hales, to authorize them to proceed with the preparation of the application and this received a unanimous vote from all present, Councilman Allan being absent when it was taken. The recorder was instructed to formulate a letter to the Utah State Highway Department informing them of the intention of improvements pertaining to West Maple and South Center -streets, which are also portions of state highway 147. Councilman Leavitt reported that the Forest Service has requested the city improve the culvert crossing installed last summer in Whiting Park for the sleigh riding hill and repair the damage to the park incurred during the sleigh season. Kent Wheeler was assigned to accomplish ac-complish this project with city employee labor. The council discussed the proposition from the Forest Service for Mapleton City to assume responsibility for Whiting Park. Councilmen Allan and Leavitt were assigned to research this matter further pertaining to whether the city would have the park deeded to them or if this would be on a lease basis. School district issues plea for voter support Continued from page one more important than supporting the bond issue is that every voter register his preference in the voting booth. That's the very foundation of our system of government." Citing why each member of the school board, elected to represent the people of all sections of the district, earnestly believes the bond issue proposal should be supported, the statement said in part: According Ac-cording to the study conducted at the request of the State Board of Education there are 11 buildings which have been rated intolerable. Nebo has the oldest buildings in the state many of which will not meet present fire and safety standards. This, situation can be greatly relieved by approval of the $4 million bond which would qualify Nebo to receive a possible $2.5 million of emergency state building monies provided by the legislature through HB105. This money is available this year only and may never be available again. Taxes will not be increased as a result of the bond issue. The Resident of Springville George Laney recalls vividly events of first 'Y Day' The morning of BYU's first Y Day 67 years ago, two lone faculty members climbed Y Mountain before sunrise, each carrying a bucket of slaked lime. When they reached the area which had been staked out to form a huge, 330-foot-long Y, they spread the lime on the ground. And so without fanfare or witnesses, George C. Laney, a mechanical drawing teacher, and Orson D. Campbell, an instructor in-structor in industrial arts, started the annual tradition which has come to be known as whitewashing the Y. Actually, the project of coating the Y with lime (they Special Friday events climax week of observance at Springville High . But the two men went up early in response to an assignment given them by BYU President George H. Brimhall who said faculty members should be the leaders in the work. Mr. Campbell is deceased, but Mr. Laney is still around to tell the tale. At age 92, he is one of the oldest residents of Springville, where he lives at the home of his son, Theon. Age has not dimmed his memory. The 1904 BYU graduate remembers that first Y Day and the events McKay. He spoke before a capacity audience in the school auditorium. Later, so called 'rap sessions' were held in the school's Little Theatre with each visiting dignitary occupying the podium and fielding questions from his audience in this smaller and more informal room. Those who appeared in turn were Tom Adams, Dr. Tom Alexander, Mrs. Franklin Caras, Dolly Young, Superintendent Joseph Reidhead, Jay McKenzie, Mr. McKay, Mike Johnson, Mayor F. Calvin Packard, Dolly Plumb, Gordon Frase, Robert O. Bowen, and Annette Bradford. Mrs. Young is secretary to Utah's senator, Ted Moss. Questions from the students ranged from the issue of Viet Nam to the U. S. Budget for this year. A high degree of interest was evidenced at all times during the main assembly and later smaller essions. FOR SALE-Miscellancous FURNACES railroad damaged, guaranteed. Get furnace work done now. "I was teaching at BYU when they decided they were going to build a Y up on the hill," Mr. Laney said in a recent in-a in-a recent interview. "I was teaching mechanical drawing and lettering, and they (the students) came into my school room and wanted my books and information on how to lay out the Y." Dr. Harvey Fletcher-father of stereo, dean emeritus of the BYU College of Physical and Engineering Sciences, and a 1907 BYU graduate-recalls that he and two other engineering students under faculty supervision super-vision surveyed and staked out the Y. They took into account the slope of the mountain and calculated the dimensions of the Y so that it would appear to have the right proportions when viewed from lower campus. The stakes were set and everything was ready for the white lime, but when the students climbed the mountain and saw how long and thin the Y looked when viewed close up, they refused to do the work, Dr. Fletcher explained. Mr. Laney said the project was supposed to be completed by 9 a.m. but the work hadn't even started by then, due to the question about the Y's proportions. Finally the students were convinced that everything was okay and a bucket brigade was formed up the side of the mountain. When the lime ran out, students obtained white sand from a pit near the base of the mountain and continued the work. "That job kept getting longer and longer, and we kept getting more tired and more tired and more exhausted," Mr. Laney recalled. "But we stayed with it--we didn't give up until we got through. We were ready to fall in our tracks and fall down that hill at four in the afternoon when we finished. Boy, were we tired.
