Show j j Work Necessary It is not women suffrage, but the electric washing rrjach-! rrjach-! ine, that has emancipated women, said a speaker before the .National Electric Light association. In other words, real I 'emancipation is freedom, not from autocracy, but from ; J drudgery. i That depends a good deal on what use is made of the ! new leisure. Drudgery is an evil. But work is a good. Mach-! Mach-! inerv emancipated men from drudgery, but they used that ' opportunity, not to escape from work, but to accomplish more i work. Unless this turns out to be true also of women, the 1 electrization of the home will present new problems of neu-J neu-J rolic idleness. J The "delcatesscn wife" is not emancipated. She is a victim, deprived of one occupation before she has adapted herself to another. The old inefficient home absorbed all, and more than all, of a woman's energy, just to keep it going. The modern electric flat absorbs much less than all of it. It is a great opportunity, for the woman of brains, self-control self-control and" resourcefulness. Inside or outside the home, paid or unpaid, she finds more inspiring activity, in place of th drawling drudgery she has escaped. She is free, not from rt'ork, but for work. But work of some sort is a necessity, for the normal life of either men or women. |
