Wattis, of Ogden, is now an aggressive candidate for the Republican nomination for governor, gov-ernor, and his candidacy is growing in favor throughout the state. He announced that he would be a candidate can-didate several weeks ago, but started start-ed no active campaign until about ten days ago, when 250 Republicans of Weber county formed a "Wattis For Governor" club and urged him to carry his campaign to every part of the state. The forming of this club was the result of requests from prominent party leaders from various var-ious counties who know Mr. Wattis' reputation as an industrial leader, and his exceptional ability as an executive. There are few men in the Inter-mountain Inter-mountain country whose experience has lead them into so many fields of business activities as has the experience of Mr. Wattis, and his diversified interests have proven uniformly successful, while at the same time being a big factor in the upbuilding of the State of Utah. Native of Weber Born in Weber county, he started as a young man working by the day until he accumulated enough money to enter construction work in a small way himself. Today he is president and general manager of the Utah Construction company, one of the largest concerns of the kind in the United States. For several sev-eral years his company has special-, ! ized in major development work , in the west, handling large railroad and reclamation projects in the western states and Mexico. Mr. Wattis is also a practical rancher and farmer his company owning large ranch and farm prop-, prop-, erties in Utah, Idaho and Nevada. These ranches contain upwards of 300,000 acres of deeded land and are stocked with 20.000 head of cattle, cat-tle, 42,000 sheep and 2000 horses. 1 All of Mr. Wattis' properties and i investments are handled through I his Utah headquarters, which is a clearing house for the entire business. busi-ness. Tribute by McKay Sponsoring the meeting which urged him to become a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor were such men as A P Bigclow and Fred M. Nve, both of whom had been frequently men-1 tioned as possible gubernatorial 1 candidates, and Apostle David O ! McKay, who paid Mr. Wattis the : following tribute: ! "I respond cheerfully to the sug-1 gestion that I say something re-1 garding the candidacy of Mr. Wattis. Wat-tis. Nlf you would succeed in business; busi-ness; if you would succeed in politics, poli-tics, you must study politics. I come as a friend of W. H. Wattis I come as a loyal Utahn. I do believe be-lieve most sincerely that W. H. Wattis is the right man at the present pres-ent time to occupy the governorship : of this state. , . "There are four great factors in life: The ability to see claerly, the ability to imagine vividly, the power to think independently, and the power to will nobly. We need a business man who has these qualities. qual-ities. He has the ability to see clearly, to see the sage brush desert des-ert and then its reclamation. We need a man of vision and a man who has handled big things, Mr. Wattis fulfills that need. He has proven that he can and does think independently. He will take advice, but will not take dictation. He will be a governor of Utah, fair and just to all. "W. H. Wattis deserves this nomination, nom-ination, and this election for the party loyalty that he has shown. If you secure his nomination, we'll elect him, and Utah will have one of the best governors any state ever had." Outstanding Executive In addition to his construction work and ranch activities, Mr. Wattis Wat-tis has taken an active interest in many other lines, and has always been prominent in the civic and political affairs of Ogden and the state of Utah. He is vice-president and general manager of the Utah-Idaho Utah-Idaho Sugar company, a director in the First National Bank and First Savings Bank, President of the Board of Trustees of Thos. D. Dee Memorial hospital, vice-president and director of the Superior Rock Springs Coal company, director direc-tor of the United States chamber of commerce, with headquarters at Washington, D. C, and vice-president of the Associated General Contractors' Con-tractors' of America. He was also three times elected president o the Weber Club and Ogden Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce. During the accumulation of all the properties his companies now control, he was the directing head and manager. If nominated and elected governor of Utah, his fine executive ability and his broad experience ex-perience will be at the service of the state, and his organizations are sf? arranged and officered that he can give his entire time to the business of the state. If the Republicans of Utah nominate nom-inate W. H. Wattis for governor at the convention to be held in Ogden August 16, and elect him in November, Novem-ber, the citizens of Utah will be assured a progressive business administration ad-ministration based on the practical experience of a man who has macle himself a leader in business, finance, fin-ance, building and ranching.
