Show V. 0. Haf en, Artist Veteran, Dies In Salt Lake City V. O. Hafen, well known artist and veteran of World War I, died Wednesday afternoon at the Veterans' Veter-ans' hospital, Salt Lake City, following fol-lowing an operation which he underwent un-derwent several days ago. Born in Springville October 14, 1887, he had made his home here V. O. Hafen most of his life with exception of the time he spent studying and teaching art. His father was John Hafen, well-known Springville art benefactor. In 1909, V. O. "Dock" as he was known by his many friends and associates, as-sociates, after several years study at the Brigham Young University, decided to make art his life work and joined his father in Indiana-( Indiana-( Continued On Page Five) V. He later studied at the Herman Art Institution Insti-tution in Indianapolisi In 1911, he was called to serve an LDS mission to France and during dur-ing the time also studied consid-ably consid-ably at the larger art schools in Paris. Some of his early paintings are said to be still in France. Upon his return home, he enlisted en-listed in the Marine Corps and saw action in World War I. He had been active in Legion affairs of Springville and was an ardent sportsman. He had served as president presi-dent of the local Sportsman Association As-sociation recently. He married Hazel Chapman in i 1922 and they moved to Oregon, j where Mr. Hafen taught in the i University of Oregon five years. He returned to Springville and has lived here since. Surviving besides his widow are a son Dean Hafen and four daughters, daugh-ters, Thora, Ruth, Gwenda and Lorna. There are also several brothers bro-thers and sisters. |
