Show January, February Poor Months For Marriage Licenses By BETTY BROOKE It seems during the past few years January and February Febru-ary have been "a doin' him wrong." Him? Why, Daniel Cupid, Esquire. The young people of Utah county have just let him down abruptly and County Clerk Clarence A. Grant says there's no explanation. Unless, that is, the poets have the idea all wrong and a young man's fancies'turn to thoughts other than love an' marriage as spring approaches. "Or, perhaps," per-haps," Mr. Grant adds, "it's the cold weather." The yearly totals have been all right; no one would suspect sus-pect the villainous attempts to wreck Dan's business. "But ah me!" sighs Mr. Grant. . "Look at these totals for January Jan-uary and February since 1934 when it all began." There were 75 marriage for the two months although 565 were married- before the year was over. 1935 was bad both ways. Only 56 couples married mar-ried during the first two months and 505 that year. January and February were even more disappointing in 1935 51 was the total marriages. mar-riages. By the end of the year things had brightened up for the number went up to 543. It is with saddened heart, Mr. Grant contemplates the year's prospects for Daniel. Only 40 marriages so far and ten months to go! Something must be done, with the likeliest ideas appearing ap-pearing as "Help Cpid Wee:-" or a W.P.A. project. |
