Cross country is a long distance run for those who enjoy running or even those who think it would be a fun sport to try. The Mapleton team holds no tryouts and no one is cut from the team Anyone who wants can just show up and run. One great perk about cross country is that runners run-ners can work to improve their personal times. Runners Run-ners also have a chance to make friends, meet other runners, and help each other oth-er out as a team. At the first practice, there were close to 75 boys and girls who attended. Sh-antel Sh-antel Johnson, a member of the Mapleton team, said that she wanted to do cross country because it's fun to run with friends and also a great way to get in shape. Coach Darrell Wyatt, head coach of the Mapleton team, said that he wants to get as many students to join as last year so that other teams in the district will also increase the size of their teams, Coach Mangum, one of the cross country coach es, said he wanted to be a coach for the team because he wanted to get to know more students and he wanted want-ed them to get to know him, not only as a science teacher, but also as a fun guy. Coach Mangum likes to say, "Never do anything stupid." Cross country is a sport you should take seriously, but also a sport you can en- joy.
