Show 16 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, October 5, 2006 Sixth Gear: BMWX3, their SAV version of a SUV Daniel Souza STAFF WRITER Normal people call it a SUV. BMW on the other hand insists in branding this type of vehicle as a SAV - Sports Activity Vehicle. Ve-hicle. I am not sure SAV is any more enticing to buyers that are unfamiliar with the term, but the German Ger-man maker packs some features worth mentioning in this week's X3. Introduced back in 2004 as a smaller, more af fordable option to its big brother X5, the X3 comes brings some new changes for 2006. They include: Body-color front and rear bumpers; previously matte-black finish Body-color side skirts (rocker panels) and wheel arches on vehicles with Sport Package 1 A new wheel design for the 18-in. Sport Package wheels and the available 18-in. wheels in differentiated differenti-ated frontrear sizes Chrome vertical grille slats and beltline trim along side windows A new design for the sport steering wheel that's part of the Sport Package. Now, a piece of information informa-tion that most of you may not be familiar with: In the BMW lineup of vehicles, whenever you see a 'x' on the vehicles name, it equals to 'all-wheel drive.' Like other current BMW models with all-wheel drive, the X3 incorporates BMW's intriguingly advanced ad-vanced xDrive all-wheel drive and traction system. Indeed, in the X3, along with its essentially all-new chassis, xDrive is at the heart of what are remarkable remark-able handling and traction capabilities. All-wheel drive is essentially essen-tially permanent; however, howev-er, under normal traction conditions, there are defined de-fined circumstances under which xDrive operates in rear-wheel drive only: During tight cornering with little engine torque, to permit large wheel-speed wheel-speed variations between the front and rear wheels (such as when parking). In tight curves with low to medium torque. At speeds in excess of 112 mph. When the vehicle tends to understeer markedly. Anytime the antilock braking function is active. But xDrive does not optimize op-timize traction alone; it can also enhance handling characteristics, fostering both agility and stability on non-slippery as well as slippery road surfaces. Via the same type of logic DSC employs to recognize and correct for excessive over-or over-or understeer, xDrive adjusts ad-justs the frontrear torque split to avoid these tendencies. tenden-cies. If undesirable over-steer over-steer is sensed, the multi-disc multi-disc clutch is completely closed, sending the maximum maxi-mum possible torque to the front wheels. If excess understeer is detected, xDrive opens the multi-disc multi-disc clutch completely, leaving no driving torque at the front wheels. All this occurs smoothly, with no overt indications to the driver; the driver merely enjoys optimum dynamics under a wide range of driving and road conditions. But handling can be dor-ment dor-ment if powerspeed is not present. Previously, 2.5-and 2.5-and 3.0-liter engine versions ver-sions powered the two X3 models; for '06 the 3.0-liter version continues in the X3 3.0i with 225 hp 5900 rpm and 214 Ib-ft. 3500. It delivers a decidedly lively live-ly 0-60 time of 7.6 sec. with manual transmission, 7.9 sec. with automatic. Up front, the suspension system is an X3-only version ver-sion of the double-pivot strut-type layout that also contributes to the excellent excel-lent ride and handling of BMW's new 3 Series Sedans Se-dans and Sports Wagon as well as all 5, 6, 7 and X5 Series models. At the rear, the X3 employs an evolution of the multi-link suspension concept from 3 Series Coupes and Convertibles Con-vertibles - called Central Link - for the more rugged terrain to which X3s will sometimes be subjected. If you are looking for something that has SUV capabilites but drives and handles like a sports sedan, se-dan, the X3 is a well-fitted choice. For gas mileage, expect 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
