XantheWebb SHS STAFF WRITER Springville High School students recently had the opportunity op-portunity to show their appreciation ap-preciation of our orchestra teacher, Mr. Sam Tsugawa. The students honored Mr. Tsugawa at the Homecoming Homecom-ing Assembly for winning the prestigious Teacher of the Year award. This award, presented by Wal-Mart, was given to Mr. Tsugawa at the assembly. Along with a plaque, he was given a number of gifts from Wal-Mart, several minutes of applause and recognition, and a $10,000 check. Because of his hard work for the past several sev-eral years, our music program has benefited immensely. Mr. Tsugawa has been the teacher for the Springville Junior Ju-nior High and the Springville High School orchestras. This year, he is finishing his doctoral doc-toral degree at Arizona State University, and will be returning return-ing to teaching next year. Mr. Tsugawa is still involved in-volved with Springville music programs this year, in spite of his absence, even handpick-ing handpick-ing an orchestra teacher, Ms. Hatch, to teach and conduct in his absence. Mr. Tsugawa is highly deserving de-serving of Wal-Mart's Utah State Teacher of the Year award, and it is shown in the quality of music and individual individu-al musicians he provides. For years now he has delighted this community with outstanding out-standing music delivered by our children. Enthusiasm was great at the assembly and gratitude flowed as students, not sitting down for several minutes, cheered for their teacher. It was apparent how much he is respected at the school, and how grateful students will be when they have him back next year.
