Show Mother talks Continued from page 1 want to learn about the true evils of drug abuse. I was appalled at the lack of attendance by other parents. I am assuming this event was well enough publicized, perhaps not. I couldn't help but notice that our school mascot, most of the town turned out. When we had a meeting to educate us about drug abuse, I doubt we had SO people show up. I am sure that is because so many parents don't realize the enormity of this problem. There was a time I didn't either. One of the counselors on the panel told us that between 75 and 80 ol students use drugs. Does that seem high to you? It is not. Ask your student. I gained information informa-tion in this meeting that could have helped me save my son's life, but it's too late for our family. It is not too late for yours and I urge you to get yourself . educated. I would like to share my story for those of you who did not attend. My intention is only to wake up some parents who may be naive. I am the mother who wrote the letters to the paper about three years ago about drug addiction. My son, Robby, came to us in his junior year of high school to tell us he was addicted to Heroin. We were shocked. He sobbed that night telling me he wanted to be a normal kid again. He was tired of the lies and being so ill. I had no idea how to help him. Our family doctor advised us to detox him at home and make him suffer. Oh, how he suffered! At one point, his heart beat reached 145 and he was delirious, so we rushed him to the ER where he was referred to the Day Spring out-patient program. pro-gram. Rob attended on his own and we attended weekly as a family. He did well for six months when he relapsed. This time we discovered discov-ered his use because he forged checks from his father and I out of desperation to support his habit. Anyone who knew Rob knew this was totally out of character for him. He had been almost a straight A student and never gave us any trouble until about eighth grade. His father and I did an intervention inter-vention with him and told him he could go to' Highland Ridge Hospital or we would have him arrested. He went to the hospital for as long as we could afford to send him. It' was not as long as they recommended. When he got out he did well for another six months. He often told me how hard It was and how when he got well, he wanted to educate parents and help kids learn about drugs. The next relapse found us still paying off Highland Ridge Hospital. Hospi-tal. I took him to the ER again, desperately sick and got him a psychiatrist who specialized in drug addiction. He also attended NA meetings and often visited his original Day Springs group. Again, he managed to stay clean six months before the next relapse. re-lapse. I was at my wits end and so was Robby. He cried and told us how sorry he was and that he just couldn't do it. I was so angry with him and so scared we would lose our youngest son! This time . Robby tried to get treatment through the state. I just couldn't pay for any more hospitalization. I was told to use tough love and make him figure this out. Rob was at the top of the waiting list through the state for Foothill Treatment Center, for six weeks. There were no empty beds' available. avail-able. They were full. . At the end of six weeks, Rob felt better and took his name off the list and got a job instead. He loved his new job and also started attending our church regularly again. He became devoted to church and even started donating a percentage of his paycheck every week. Robby got a nice car, joined a gym and dated a darling girlfriend that he hoped to marry one day. We thought we had turned a corner with him. He looked so good and our family was grateful to have the old Rob back in our lives. Rob was now 19 years old. The day after Easter, April 16, 2001, 1 went to wake him up for work. When I knocked on his door, there was no answer. I opened his door and he didn't look right. I screamed bis name and shook him, but got no response. re-sponse. I felt for a pulse; nothing. noth-ing. I immediately began CPR in between screaming at him not to leave me! I called 911 and went back to doing CPR. . - ,, When the ambulance arrived, I could do nothing but pray to mum hmmx ml The following students have earned a place on the first term honor roll at the Middle School. I prayed that He would take me instead, I asked over and over for Him to take me. In my heart I knew the answer was no and that it had to be an overdose. , I learned that Robby had died at the hospital, before my family arrived. 1 had to tell each family member as they got there. To say our lives have changed is an understatement. With the help of antidepressants and a lot of prayer, I am coping and trying to live a life that will make Rob proud of his mother. Our other family members are doing the same. I think Rob would want me to get the word out about addiction, about the unavailability of affordable afford-able treatment and to help remove re-move the stigma attached to this disease. This is a disease started by poor choices, not a moral issue. I only write our story to tell other parents not to miss an opportunity to learn what to do if your child starts using drugs. The detective who spoke the other night gave us invaluable information, informa-tion, as did the courageous recovering recov-ering addicts who spoke. I wish to God I had known this information informa-tion three years ago, I might have saved Rob's life. Parents, don't think it can't happen to your family. I am. living proof that it can. Kids, if your friends are using, tell someone! some-one! Tell your friend's parents or your parents. Tell your Bishop or pastor or call someone at the police station. If anyone would have told us Rob had used that night before he died, you better believe I would have had him in the ER immediately. immedi-ately. He was sick that night and I assumed he was getting the flu. Don't let your friends die from an overdose of drugs or alcohol. Another parent asked me the other night what I would have done differently with Robby. I answered that I would have had him arrested when he forged our checks. I didn't know then about the benefits of our Drug Court system. It saves lives! Educate yourselves about this and be tough with your kids, but do it with never-ending love. Parents, call the nigh school, they can direct you to a PTA member who can get you some information. Also, please don't miss next year's meeting, it could save your child's life. I thank you for letting me share our story. I am available any time to talk to anyone should the need arise. Call me at 801-489-5422, home or 801-319-1331, cell.
