As with many activities in Mapleton, baseball is for the whole family. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends were all in Denver to lend support to the team. Gaude Rominger coached the All-stars last year and this year it was his 18 year old son, Cary, who led the team. "Ten years ago I was coaching the team with my oldest boy, Ricky, as a player," recalls Gaude, "We made it to the Western Regionals in Oregon and took third place. Now my youngest has coached them to second place. It's really great!" The highlight of the team's adventure to Denver had to be the 4-0 4-0 shutout pitched by Johnny Averett against Idaho. It was their best game with no errors and a great effort by the rest of the team to back up Johnny including a remarkable throw from centerfield by Joe Carter directly home to catcher Todd Frischnecht to prevent a run from scoring. . The boys had the opportunity to visit the Denver Mint and a local amusement park on their day off after winning the game against Aurora. However, -when they saw the West Seattle team, their confidence was a bit shaken. "The Seattle team, every one of them, was a head taller than our boys. We thought our left fielder Andrew Ford was big until we saw these kids!" said Rominger. Of course, the fact that the Seattle team was chosen from a field of 15 teams versus the All-starts who were selected from 5 teams had a lot to do with it. The team also had to contend with differences in coaching techniques. "We were told by the Seattle coach at a coach 's meeting to keep our boys out of the baselines as his team had been taught to run over anyone in their way heading for a base. And they did. We don't play like that, it's dangerous and unnecessary." Every player, including the alternates, was called out on the field to receive one of the beautiful trophies. Pitchers were Jared Shelley, Johnny Averett, Joe Carter and Nathan Hjorth with Todd Frischknecht as catcher. Kelley Thorpe shared first base duties with Nathan Taylor, Jake Allman was at second with Shane Bunce as shortstop and Jared Shelley was on ' third. Outfielders were Stewart Peay, Joe Carter, Justin Alvey, Andrew Ford, Mike Peirce, Gavin Groneman and Wayne Vance. Serving as alternates were Justin Taylor, Brett Miller, Todd Kirby, and Chad Giles. Assisting coach Cary Rominger were Verl Shelley as Manager, Richard Thorpe as Business Manager and Todd Parker as Assistant Coach. it V - ' f " v- Ji v"' i - i "" . vVt J?lll'J L'1""' 1 Members of the Mapleton All-Star Baseball team line up to accept their trophies after taking second in the Northwest Regional Tournament in Denver.
