She gives you lots of toys and nice things. She bakes pies and things like that. She lets you sleep over and stay up late. I love her very much. Now I will tell you about my Grandpa. My Grandpa is very funny. He does funny tricks. He gives you nice loves. And he gives you lots of treats. He lets you help him when he has lots to do. He tells stories. He gives you nice gifts at Christmas time. I am glad I have nice Grandparents that I love very much and care about. by Amy Parker 1st place-4th grade How My Grandparents Help Me My Grandparents are my very best friends. Their names are Helen and Don Spencer, and David and Glade Young. Whenever I need to sell candy for the school, I can count on them to buy and sometimes they let me help eat it. My Grandpa Spencer takes me fishing. He never gets mad or yells at me when I tangle up his favorite pole or when I get a snag. He never makes me put that ucky worm on the hook and always lets me pull in his biggest fish. He says I'm the best fisher girl my age but I think he's the best. My Poppy Young is really special. Whenever he sees me he gives me a great big hug and asks how I'm doing. When I visit him I crawl into his lap and he reads me stories. When we have our big family Christmas party He dresses up as Santa Claus. I didn't know when I was little but now that I do know he's Santa it makes me feel even better. My Grandma Spencer has a way of making sad days turn to happy days. When I fall down she rocks me and sings to me. She tells me I can do "something" or "a thing" and some how I do, Just for the fun of it she takes me shopping. When were done she sometimes takes me for an ice cream. My Gammy Young really makes me smile. When she says cookies, I get a great big smile, and run to the Attorney seeks re-election to state school board Margaret R. Nelson, Depty Utah County Attorney, has announced her candidacy for re-election to the Utah State Board of Education, District 8. As a Member of the State School Board during the past two critical years, Ms. Nelson has participated in laying the foundation for one of the most extensive educational reform efforts in the history of the state. She is seeking re-election in an effort to insure continuity in leadership, leader-ship, direction and purpose as these essential programs are implemented. im-plemented. She believes that the educational reforms adopted by the Board hold great promise for the future if they are allowed to take root under the guidance of a supportive suppor-tive Board with a full vision of their potential. When she took office in 1983, 7 of the 9 State Board Members were new. This new Board took immediate im-mediate steps to intensify high school graduation requirements by doubling the math and science requirement re-quirement and instituting a computer com-puter literacy requirement for every student, commencing with the class of 1988. And for the first time in the state's history, stringent curriculum standards have been adopted at the elementary, junior high school and high7 school level. In an effort to attract and retain outstanding teachers, Ms. Nelson has made significant strides in breaking the lock step salary schedule which compensates teachers solely on the basis of tenure and degree. She believes that career ladders represent the first positive effort on a statewide basis to give tangible recognition to superior teachers. Ms. Nelson has been a strong advocate ad-vocate for vocational programs which prepare students to meet the technological needs of the eighties. She serves on a Liaison Committee with the Board of Regents which has been characterized by the Commissioner Commis-sioner of Higher Education as the most productive and useful advance between public and higher education in this state. The two boards have adopted a formal agreement resolving resolv-ing long standing disputes oyer vocational governance. A statewide vocational masterplan has been adopted which reduces duplication, eliminates jurisdictional overlap and promotes continuity between secondary and higher education programs. pro-grams. Concurrent enrollment classes have been implemented to I enable secondary students to earn college credit while attending high school. t Ms. Nelson feels that it is im-perative im-perative that we eliminate waste and explore alternatives to new I school construction. Under the 1 Board's leadership, year round 'schools have been established in Utah County and many other areas of the state. My very favorite toy is my clown Gussie, and guess who made it. I must be luckiest kid around cause my grandparents are my best friends. by Sharece Young 5th grade-lst place How I Can Make Friends Friends are something I will need throughout fny entire life. But, why do I need friends? I would be very lonely if I had no one to do things with. At least two are needed to play most games. There would be no sleepovers, no one to throw a ball to. Riding a bicycle is exciting and enjoyable when you can ride and talk with someone else. Working with others on a scout activity is a better and quicker way to learn and get things done. I would have no one to share my ups and downs with, without others, life would be very boring. Most things are better when shared with others. Telling someone about my visit to Disneyland helps me remember the experience more. I feel very happy and excited all over again. When I share a sad time with a friend it makes it easier to bear. It gives me a feeling that somebody cares about me. Before I can have a friend, I must be my own 'friend; I need to like myself and the things I am doing. You can't build another person up without something to build them up with. For example, I can't make someone else happy without first being happy myself. People don't like to be around others that are gloomy, that are always brooding about some dumb thing. It just isn't any fun. I'd rather be at a funeral. I need to be happy and smile sincerely to attract friends. I also need to be the kind of person who can make people happy, instead of others always trying to keep my happy all the time. I need to set some personal standards for myself and keep them. The same standards I look for in friends are the qualities that others are looking for in me. Being honest and trustworthy trust-worthy are things I must be. I expect my friends to be alo. I can be a friend to others by trying to keep the conversation on them and not myself. Nobody likes to be around someone who is always bragging and talking about himself. This makes others feel like you don't care about them. Another way to make friends is to ask the right kind of questions. These questions should bring out common interests and goals. Getting to know another helps in understanding un-derstanding and decreases the gap between two people. It brings people together. By being a happy person, smiling, liking myself first, and asking the right questions, I can make friends. These things will be important for me to use and remember all my life, by Greg Wheeler -October 31, 1984 - The Springville Herald - Page Eleven ELECT TIM MOEAK ' Ml i TO WORK FOR YOU Proven Leadership Mayor Spanish Fork 12 years City Councilman 6 years Education Principal and School Teacher 35 years Member Governor's Advisory Council Member Utah Law Enforcement Planning Agency Member Judical Nominating Committee, 4th Judical District Experienced in Legislative Activities as President of Utah League of Cities and Towns Graduate BYU, B.S., M.S. degrees Veteran World War II Numerous Civic and Church Leadership Positions UTAH HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES DISTRICT 66 Spanish Fork, Mapleton, S.W.
