Show Prominent attorney, native of this area, dies in plane crash F I I lift , k X r I f . ' ' . f- '- . - ' , :'i Attorney Richard Rulon W kins, 38, former resident 11 this city, lost his life in i plane accident Silt. Nov. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Holliday LDS Fifth Ward, Salt Lake City, for Attorney At-torney Richard R. Wilkins, son of Mrs. Norma Holley Wilkins Wil-kins Mackenzie of Mapleton. He was one of 13 people who lost their lives in a plane crash near Camp Williams, Saturday, Nov. 27, 1965. The chartered plane was enroute to the BYU-New Mexico football game at Alberquerque. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, under direction of Berg Mortuary. After his military service Mr. Wilkins enrolled at BYU. In 1949 he went on an LDS Mission to France and returned to BYU three years later. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1954. He entered Stanford University Univer-sity and received a doctor of laws degree in 1957. While at Stanford he married Dorothy Steele, June 30, 1955 in the Manti LDS Temple. Richard Rulon Wilkins was born Oct. 6, 1927, in Springville, Spring-ville, a son of Rulon S. and Norma Holley Wilkins. He was educated in the Springville schools and graduated from Springville High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and spent three years in the South Pacific and European Theatres. At the time of his discharge he held the rank of lieutenant commander. Mr. Wilkins received a master mas-ter of law degree in 1958 from New York University and was employed by Wilkinson, Cra-gun Cra-gun and Barker law firm in Washington, D.C. In 1960 he moved to Salt Lake City and became a partner part-ner in the law firm, Watkins, Wilkins and Romney. An active member of the LDS Church he was counselor in the Olympus Stake Mission Presidency and president of the 296th Quorum of Seventies at the time of his death. He was a member of the American and Utah Bar Associations Asso-ciations and director of the BYU Boosters Club in Salt Lake City. He was also active in several civic organizations. Survivors include his widow, and daughter, Julie, 4, both of Salt Lake City; his mother and step-father, Mr .and Mrs. Glen Mackenzie, Mapleton; two sisters, sis-ters, Mrs. Milton D. (Jean) Johnson, Medford, Ore.; Mrs. Robert R. (Joan) Thorpe, San Jose, Calif. |
