Show TFIVE SKELETONS UNCOVERED IN DIGGING TRENCH Possibility Of Indians Being Buried At Site Many Years Ago The uncovering of five skeletons by city workmen digging a sewer trench Friday at First South, 1st West street, has been the subject of considerable speculation the past few days on how and when the bodies were buried. The skeletons were apparently encased in a black soil in contrast to the surrounding gravel. Two skeletons were found close together to-gether and a short distance away, three others were found They were covered with about six feet of ground. Examination of the skulls indicated that the bodies could have been those of Indians as the cheek bones were high. The teeth were perfect but were considrably worn, indicating , te remains could be those of very early inhabitants. Many of the bones were in an advanced ad-vanced stage of decomposition, also pointing to the fact that bur- ial took place many years ago Mrs. Mary J. Finley, early resident resi-dent of this city, who is acquainted acquaint-ed with historical sites and data, offered an opinion that the skeletons skele-tons were 1 those of Indians . as Springville people buried their dead in the cemetery as long as white ( people had been here. The fact that the skeletons were buried deeper than it was the custom cus-tom of Indians to bury their dead, and also in contrasting soil, could be accounted for in the possibility that additional soil had been piled up in construction of the roadway and other building activities in that part of town. |
