Show MOTHER OF LOCAL WOMAN DIES AT AGE OF 101 Mrs. Sylvia Eliza Sanford Met-calf, Met-calf, mother of Mrs.T. S. Brown of this city and the oldest resident of Utah, died last Tuesday at Gunnison, Gunni-son, at the age of 101. She would have been 102 in November. Born in Hancock county, 111., a daughter of Cyrus and Sylvia Clark Sanford, she crossed the plains with her family when she was four years old. Her father was the first school teacher and mayor of Springville. Her husband, Anthony Metcalf, to whom she was married in August, 1862, died In March, 1942.' Mrs. Metcalf was a practical nurse for many years and took an active part in church work. She was the mother of fifteen sons and daughters, five of whom are living. Her descendants number more than 250, including five daughters, Mrs. Eliza Chew of Vernal; Ver-nal; Mrs. Sylvia E. Caldwell. Cen-terfield; Cen-terfield; Mrs. Emma E. Brown, Springville; Mrs. Ina Nelson, Gunnison; Gun-nison; Mrs. Jane Ann Nelson, Salt Lake City. She was the oldest of five generations. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Clara Packard of Ogden. A large number of Springville relatives and friends went to Gunnison Gun-nison on Saturday to attend the funeral services. Burial was in the Gunnison cemetery. j |
